THE FAMILIES AND WORK INSTITUTE (FWI) IS A NON-PROFIT RESEARCH ORGANIZATION THAT STUDIES THE CHANGING WORKFORCE, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY. AS A PREEMINENT THINK TANK, FWI IS KNOWN FOR BEING AHEAD OF THE CURVE, IDENTIFYING EMERGING ISSUES, AND THEN CONDUCTING RIGOROUS RESEARCH THAT OFTEN CHALLENGES COMMON WISDOM, PROVIDES INSIGHT AND KNOWLEDGE AND INSPIRES CHANGE.

WORK LIFE PROGRAMS - FWI IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING OBJECTIVE INFORMATION ON CHANGES IN THE WORKFORCE AND WORKPLACE IN ORDER TO INFORM DECISION-MAKERS IN GOVERNMENT, BUSINESS, COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES. TOWARD THIS END, THE INSTITUTE CONDUCTS ITS OWN NATIONALLY REPRESENTATIVE RESEARCH STUDIES AS WELL AS STUDIES OF EMPLOYEES OF LEADING COMPANIES GLOBALLY. THE NATIONAL STUDY OF THE CHANGING WORKFORCE (NSCW): NSCW, A CORNERSTONE OF FWI'S RESEARCH, IS CONDUCTED WITH A LARGE NATIONALLY REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE OF U.S. WORKERS. THE 2008 NSCW BUILDS ON THE 1977 QUALITY OF EMPLOYMENT SURVEY, CONDUCTED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, AND FWI'S 1992, 1997 AND 2002 NATIONAL STUDIES OF THE CHANGING WORKFORCE, PROVIDING 30-YEAR TREND DATA. IT IS THE ONLY ONGOING STUDY OF ITS KIND OR SCALE TO PROVIDE SUCH EXTENSIVE INFORMATION ABOUT WORKERS' LIVES ON AND OFF THE JOB. REPORTS CREATED FROM THE NATIONAL STUDY INCLUDE:- TIMES ARE CHANGING GENDER AND GENERATION AT WORK AND AT HOME- THE STATE OF HEALTH IN THE AMERICAN WORKFORCE: DOES HAVING AN EFFECTIVE WORKPLACE MATTER?- THE NATIONAL STUDY OF EMPLOYERS- THE IMPACT OF THE RECESSION ON EMPLOYERS- LEADERS IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY- LEADERS IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY: FINDING THE FIT FOR TOP TALENT- LEADERS IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY: TALENT MANAGEMENT IN EUROPEAN CULTURES- SUPPORTING ENTRY LEVEL, HOURLY EMPLOYEES- THE AGING WORKFORCE- OVERWORK IN AMERICA: WHEN THE WAY WE WORK BECOMES TOO MUCH- GENERATION AND GENDER IN THE WORKPLACEWHEN WORK WORKS: A PROJECT ON WORKPLACE EFFECTIVENESS AND FLEXIBILITY: THIS NATIONWIDE INITIATIVE IS DESIGNED TO SHARE RESEARCH ON WHAT MAKES WORK "WORK" IN THE 21ST CENTURY. THE PURPOSE OF WHEN WORK WORKS IS TO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF WORKFORCE EFFECTIVENESS AND WORKPLACE FLEXIBILITY AS STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE BUSINESSES' COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY, AND TO HELP BOTH EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES SUCCEED. ITS GOALS ARE TO SHARE RESEARCH FINDINGS ON WORKPLACE EFFECTIVENESS AND FLEXIBILITY; SHARE BEST PRACTICES FOR MAKING WORK "WORK" IN SMALL, MID-SIZED AND LARGE WORKPLACES; CREATE PRACTICAL RESOURCES FOR EMPLOYERS, COMMUNITY LEADERS, POLICY MAKERS AND INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYEES IN CREATING MORE EFFECTIVE, FLEXIBLE WORKPLACES; AND PROVIDE RECOGNITION TO TOP EMPLOYERS THROUGH THE ALFRED P. SLOAN AWARDS FOR BUSINESS EXCELLENCE IN WORKPLACE FLEXIBILITY. THE PROJECT HAS PRODUCED A NUMBER OF REPORTS AND MATERIALS ON EFFECTIVE AND FLEXIBLE WORKPLACES, INCLUDING: GUIDE TO BOLD NEW IDEAS FOR MAKING WORK WORK; THE ALFRED P. SLOAN AWARDS FOR BUSINESS EXCELLENCE IN WORKPLACE FLEXIBILITY; AND MAKING WORK WORK: A TOOLKIT FOR CREATING EFFECTIVE AND FLEXIBLE WORKPLACES.WORK LIFE LEGACY AWARD: FWI'S WORK LIFE LEGACY AWARD WAS CREATED IN 2004 TO HONOR THE FOUNDERS AND LEADERS OF THE WORK LIFE MOVEMENT AND TO CAPTURE THEIR STORIES AS A WAY OF DOCUMENTING THE HISTORY OF THIS SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION AND TO INSPIRE FUTURE LEADERS.CORPORATE LEADERSHIP CIRCLE: FWI'S CORPORATE LEADERSHIP CIRCLE (CLC) IS A UNIQUE GROUP OF TOP LEVEL NATIONAL AND GLOBAL COMPANIES DEEPLY INTERESTED IN HOW TO CREATE AN ENGAGED AND PRODUCTIVE WORKFORCE AND IN RESEARCH-BASED WORKFORCE TRENDS. THE CIRCLE IS COMPOSED OF PROFESSIONALS IN AREAS OF WORK LIFE, HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT, DIVERSITY, EMPLOYEE RELATIONS, WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP AND NETWORKS, MANAGEMENT TRAINING AND BUSINESS STRATEGY.FWI AND SOCIAL MEDIA: FWI CONTINUES TO EXPAND ITS COMMUNICATION STRATEGY TO INCLUDE SOCIAL MEDIA, WHICH INCLUDES A BLOG, TWITTER ACCOUNT AND YOUTUBE CHANNEL.


CHILD, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS - FWI'S WORK INCLUDES A LONG COMMITMENT TO FOCUS ON EARLY LEARNING AND THE IMPLICATIONS OF WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT EARLY LEARNING FOR TEACHER AND CLASSROOM QUALITY AND EARLY CHILDHOOD SYSTEM DESIGN. WE HAVE ALSO FOCUSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF BROAD SCALE COMMUNICATIONS CAMPAIGNS TO SHARE EARLY LEARNING RESEARCH WITH A WIDE RANGE OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR AUDIENCES.MIND IN THE MAKING: THE SCIENCE OF EARLY LEARNING: MIND IN THE MAKING, IS AN UNPRECEDENTED AND UNPARALLELED COLLABORATIVE EFFORT TO SHARE IN THE SCIENCE OF EARLY LEARNING WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC, FAMILIES AND PROFESSIONALS WHO WORK WITH CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. OVER THE YEARS, WE HAVE FILMED RESEARCHERS "IN ACTION"- SHOWING ACTUAL EXPERIMENTS AND PRESENTING SCIENCE OF EARLY LEARNING WITH CHILDREN FROM BIRTH THROUGH EIGHT YEARS OLD IN AN ACCESSIBLE, ENGAGING AND INSPIRING WAY. WE ARE CREATING A WIDE ARRAY OF MULTIMEDIA MATERIALS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO HELP DIVERSE AUDIENCES BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE.MIND OF THE MAKING: NATIONAL CAMPAIGN: THE OFFICIAL "LAUNCH" OF THIS NATIONAL INITIATIVE BEGAN DURING 2010. THE CAMPAIGN INCLUDES:- LEARNING MODULES FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHERS (IN SPANISH AND IN ENGLISH)- LEARNING MODULES FOR FAMILIES, AND A SERIES OF FAMILY VIDEOS- A DVD OF IMPORTANT EXPERIMENTS IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH - FROM CLASSICS TO CUTTING EDGE- TIP SHEETS FOR FAMILIES- COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION EFFORTS- MONTHLY CONFERENCE CALLS FOR NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO DISCUSS PLANS FOR THE CAMPAIGN- A CONGRESSIONAL LAUNCH EVENT - THIS WAS A BIPARTISAN EVENT HOSTED BY MEMBERS OF CONGRESS WITH HIGHLIGHTS AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC VIA WEBCLIPS AND/OR PODCASTS; AND- A NATIONAL PRESS CLUB MEDIA EVENT AND SATELLITE MEDIA TOUR WAS HELD TO ANNOUNCE MIND IN THE MAKING.MIND IN THE MAKING: THE SEVEN ESSENTIAL SKILLS EVERY CHILD NEEDS: THIS BOOK BY ELLEN GALINSKY, PRESIDENT OF FWI, TRANSLATES THE RESEARCH AND SCIENCE OF HOW BABIES BRAINS WORK AND HOW LEARNING HAPPENS IN LAY TERMS. SHE IDENTIFIES THE SKILLS CHILDREN NEED TO STAY MOTIVATED, ENGAGED IN LEARNING AND SEE THEMSELVES AS ONGOING, LIFE-LONG LEARNERS.LEARNING MODULES OF EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHERS: THE LEARNING MODULES ARE 12-PART AND FACILITATES LEARNING PROCESS THAT BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN RESEARCH AND PRACTICE FOR TEACHERS IN CENTER AND HOME-BASED EARLY CHILDHOOD SETTINGS FOR CHILDREN FROM BIRTH THROUGH SCHOOL-ENTRY.
