ADVOCACY AND ENGAGEMENT - NYC BIRD ALLIANCE'S PUBLIC PROGRAMS ENGAGE THOUSANDS OF NEW YORKERS IN LEARNING ABOUT AND APPRECIATING URBAN WILDLIFE.OUR ADVOCACY EFFORTS WORK TO PROTECT WILD BIRDS AND HABITAT ACROSS THE CITY. IN FISCAL YEAR 2024, WE SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED OUR ADVOCACY EFFORTS WITH A NEW DIRECTOR WHO HAS HELPED US WORK WITH COALITIONS AND WITH CITY AND STATE AGENCIES TO MAKE NEW YORK CITY MORE SUSTAINABLE AND HEALTHIER FOR WILDLIFE, AND FOR PEOPLE. WE BUILT RELATIONSHIPS WITH CITY AGENCIES TO CREATE AND ENFORCE POLICIES THAT PROTECTS WILD BIRDS AND HABITAT IN CITY PARKS AND BEACHES, WILDLIFE REFUGES, AND MORE.
CONSERVATION - NYC BIRD ALLIANCE'S CONSERVATION AND SCIENCE EFFORTS ARE ORGANIZED INTO THREE PROGRAMMATIC AREAS THAT PROTECT BIRDS IN THE CITY AND ALONG THE ATLANTIC FLYWAY: WATERBIRDS, PROJECT SAFE FLIGHT, AND GREENSPACE AS HABITAT. OUR "WATERBIRDS PROGRAM," FOCUSES ON THE HEALTH OF NEW YORK HARBOR USING WATERBIRDS AS BIOINDICATORS. WE MONITOR AND SAFEGUARD THE BIRDS THAT BREED, STOPOVER, AND WINTER IN THE CITY'S WATERWAYS, ISLANDS, BEACHES, AND WETLANDS. OUR "PROJECT SAFE FLIGHT," AIMS TO MAKE NYC SAFER FOR MIGRATORY BIRDS BY REDUCING THE HAZARDS OF WINDOW COLLISIONS AND ARTIFICIAL LIGHT AT NIGHT. OUR "GREENSPACE AS HABITAT," WORKS TO ENHANCE BIRD HABITAT IN PARKS, GARDENS, GREEN ROOFS, AND OTHER GREEN SPACES IN THE CITY'S BUILT ENVIRONMENT.ALL THREE OF OUR CONSERVATION PROGRAMS GREW IN FISCAL YEAR 2024 AS NEW REVENUE FROM CONSERVATION SERVICES ALLOWED US TO HIRE AN ADDITIONAL STAFF SCIENTIST TO FOCUS ON GREEN ROOF ECOLOGY AND MONITORING. WE EXPECT CONTINUED GROWTH IN THIS AREA GIVEN PRIVATE COMPANIES' INTEREST IN MAKING THEIR BUILDINGS MORE SUSTAINABLE TO REDUCE ENERGY NEEDS, PREVENT STORMWATER RUNOFF, AND CREATE WILDLIFE HABITAT.
