HEAD STARTHEAD START IS A COMPREHENSIVE PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM SERVING CHILDREN, WHOSE FAMILIES ARE AT OR BELOW POVERTY GUIDELINES SET BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES. HEAD START CHILDREN ARE ENROLLED IN A FULL-DAY OR EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM, AND THE CHILDREN ARE SERVED IN THE SEA CLIFF, GLEN HEAD, OYSTER BAY, LOCUST VALLEY AND GLEN COVE COMMUNITIES. FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JULY 31, 2021, THE CENTERS CONTRACT WAS CHANGED FROM PART-TIME 3.5 HOURS PER DAY TO 7.5-HOUR FULL-TIME DAYS IN 6 OUT OF ITS 7 HEAD START CLASSROOMS, WITH A REDUCTION OF CHILDREN FROM 159 TO 114. THE FUNDING AMOUNT REMAINED THE SAME.DAY CAREDAY CARE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED TO WORKING PARENTS WHO ARE SUBSIDIZED BY THE LOCAL DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES. SOME PARENTS PAY A SLIDING SCALE FEE SET BY THE LOCAL DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES FOR DAY CARE SERVICES. DAY CARE SERVICES MAY ALSO BE PROVIDED TO HEAD START CHILDREN WHO NEED EXTENDED CARE.SPECIAL EDUCATIONPRE-SCHOOL SPECIAL EDUCATION IS A PROGRAM THAT SERVICES CHILDREN WITH DIAGNOSED DISABILITIES. THE FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM COMES FROM NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. SOME CHILDREN MAY REQUIRE SERVICES PROVIDED BY CERTIFIED SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS, SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST AND OTHER CLINICIANS. PARENT, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTWHEN FAMILIES, COMMUNITIES AND SCHOOLS WORK TOGETHER, STUDENTS ARE MORE SUCCESSFUL AND THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY BENEFITS.HEALTH, SAFETY AND NUTRITIONCHILDRENS GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, LEARNING, AND OVERALL WELL-BEING ARE DEPENDENT ON SAFE AND HEALTHY PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENTS AND ON SOUND NUTRITION.
