THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE COMMUNITY CHEST IS TO RAISE FUNDS TO BE DISBURSED AS GRANTS TO OTHER CAREFULLY SCREENED NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT PROVIDE A WIDE RANGE OF SERVICES TO THE RESIDENTS OF PORT WASHINGTON. THE COMMUNITY CHEST ALSO RENTS SPACE WITHIN ITS FACILITY AT BELOW MARKET RATES TO NON PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS,HELPING THEM FULFILL THEIR MISSIONS. IN MARCH 2020, THE COMMUNITY CHEST INITIATED AND ADMINISTERED THE PORT WASHINGTON COVID-19 COMMUNITY RESPONSE FUND TO MAKE COVID-19 EMERGENCY GRANTS FOR FOOD NEEDS, HOUSING COSTS AND OTHER EXPENSES TO EXISTING COMMUNITY AND FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE STRONG EXPERIENCE SUPPORTING PORT WASHINGTON RESIDENTS.

THE COMMUNITY CHEST AWARDED GRANTS RANGING FROM $2,500 TO $47,500 TO 22 NOT FOR PROFIT 501(C)(3) ORGANIZATIONS FOR SPECIFIC PROGRAMS OR GENERAL OPERATING EXPENSES. THESE ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDED SERVICES TO PORT WASHINGTON RESIDENTS WHICH INCLUDED: DAY CARE; DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION CLASSES; COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS; JOB TRAINING; RECREATIONAL, ATHLETIC, AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS; AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS. REPORTS FROM THESE AGENCIES INDICATE MORE THAN 6,500 RESIDENTS BENEFITTED FROM THE SERVICES PROVIDED BY COMMUNITY CHEST GRANTS TO THESE ORGANIZATIONS.
THE COMMUNITY CHEST RENTED APPROXIMATELY 13500 SQUARE FEET OF SPACE AT LESS THAN FAIR VALUE RATES TO NINE NOT FOR PROFITS. THESE RATES INCLUDED PROVISION OF HEAT, ELECTRICITY AND WATER. THE ORGANIZATIONS RENTING THESE SPACES USED THEM TO OFFER: AN ART COOPERATIVE THAT OFFERS PROGRAMMING FOR YOUTHS AND ADULTS; A JOB TRAINING PROGRAM FOR ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES; ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS; AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING AND ACTIVITIES FOR YOUTH; ASSISTANCE FOR THE INDIGENT; RECREATIONAL SOCCER FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES; PROGRAMS, SERVICES, RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY FOR PEOPLE WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS; AND PROGRAMS CONCERNED WITH THE PRESERVATION OF THE CULTURAL TRADITIONS OF LONG ISLAND.
