FOUNDED IN 1989, THE FRIENDS OF THE NEW HAVEN ANIMAL SHELTER, INC., (FNHAS) IS A VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO HELPING THE ANIMALS AT THE NEW HAVEN ANIMAL SHELTER FIND RESPONSIBLE, LOVING HOMES. WE INCORPORATED AND BECAME AN OFFICIAL 501(C)(3) CHARITY IN 2001.OUR PRIMARY GOAL IS TO ENSURE THAT OUR SHELTER ANIMALS RECEIVE THE MOST COMPASSIONATE CARE POSSIBLE. AT THE SAME TIME, WE STRIVE TO MAKE THE NEW HAVEN ANIMAL SHELTER THE FIRST PLACE RESIDENTS OF THE GREATER NEW HAVEN AREA THINK OF WHEN THEY DECIDE TO ADOPT A PET. TO THAT END, WE CONTINUE TO BUILD OUR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, IMPROVE THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OF THE SHELTER, RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE SHELTER'S SERVICES, AND ABOVE ALL, FIND PERMANENT HOMES FOR OUR ANIMALS.OUR VOLUNTEERS WORK DIRECTLY WITH THE SHELTER STAFF TO PROVIDE THE ANIMALS AND THE PEOPLE OF NEW HAVEN WITH THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE SERVICE POSSIBLE. AS PART OF OUR EFFORTS, WE DO THE FOLLOWING:TOTAL NUMBER OF ANIMALS ADOPTED FOR 10/1/2022 TO 9/30/23 WAS 121 (72 DOGS AND 49 CATS.)PAY FOR UNUSUAL MEDICAL CARE THAT THE ANIMALS WOULD NOT ORDINARILY RECEIVE, INCLUDING X-RAYS AND TESTS FOR DISEASES LIKE HEART WORM AND FELINE LEUKEMIA. THIS YEAR'S MEDICAL EXPENSES TOTALED $70,927.26.PARTICIPATE WITH TEAM, A MOBILE SPAY/NEUTER FACILITY FOR CATS.SPONSOR A FOSTER CARE PROGRAM FOR DOGS AND CATS THAT NEED SPECIAL ATTENTION.OFFER PERSONAL ASSISTANCE IN CHOOSING A COMPANION ANIMAL TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ADOPT FROM THE SHELTER.WORK WITH LOCAL AND REGIONAL RESCUE GROUPS AND LOCAL SHELTERS TO PLACE CATS AND DOGS IN GOOD HOMES.APPEAR WEEKLY ON WTNH-TV NEWS CHANNEL 8'S POPULAR 'PET OF THE WEEK' SEGMENT.MAINTAIN TWO WEBSITES, ONE AT WWW.PETFINDER.COM AND WWW.FINDAFRIENDFORLIFE.ORG WHICH GENERATE MANY QUALITY ADOPTIONS.PUBLISH AMONG FRIENDS, A TWICE-YEARLY NEWSLETTER.EDUCATE OWNERS ABOUT PET CARE.OUR VOLUNTEERS WORK IN MANY AREAS. SOME DEAL DIRECTLY WITH GROOMING, WALKING, AND SOCIALIZING TO KEEP THEM ACCUSTOMED TO PEOPLE. OTHERS PREFER TO WORK IN FUND-RAISING AND OTHER PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAMS.ABOUT VOLUNTEERINGTHE FNHAS IS GROWING RAPIDLY! WE SEE A BRIGHT FUTURE, AND WE ARE SURE THAT, WITH YOUR HELP, WE CAN BOOST THE SHELTER'S ADOPTION RATE AND, IN THE PROCESS, MAKE THE LIVES OF THE ANIMALS IN OUR CARE MORE COMFORTABLE AND STIMULATING. THE VOLUNTEER GROUP EXISTS FOR TWO BASIC REASONS. FIRST, TO HELP THE DOGS IN THE SHELTER MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH PEOPLE SO THEY WILL BECOME MORE ADOPTABLE, AND SECOND, TO GIVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU A CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. YOU CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN BY BECOMING A VOLUNTEER AND DONATING YOUR TIME TO SERVE IN ANY CAPACITY YOU FIND PERSONALLY REWARDING. THERE ARE SEVERAL SPECIALIZED AREAS OPEN TO MEMBERS, SUCH AS ANIMAL CARE AND SOCIALIZATION, WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT, DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, FUND RAISING, PUBLIC RELATIONS, FACILITIES IMPROVEMENT, ADOPTION COUNSELING, AND ADVERTISING.
