THE AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS ASSOCIATION CHAPTER OF RI REACHED MORE THAN 300 PATIENTS AND PATIENT'S FAMILIES THROUGH INFORMATION AND REFERRALS, HOME VISITS, SUPPORT GROUPS AS WELL AS PROVIDING EQUIPMENT LOANS, HANDICAPPED TRANSPORTION AND RESPITE CARE AT NO COST TO THE PATIENT. OUR CHAPTER ALSO FUNDS AN ALS SPECIFIC MULTI-DISCIPLINARY MEDICAL CLINIC THAT PROVIDES THE SERVICES IN THE AREA OF NEUROLOGY, PULMONOLOGY, PHYISICAL, OCCUPATIONAL AND SPEECH THERAPY AND NUTRITION IN ONE LOCATION.
THERE ARE NUMEROUS PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL AND PUBLIC AWARENESS OUTREACH. ALS AWARENESS DAY IS HELD ANNUALLY AT THE RHODE ISLAND STATE HOUSE DURING MAY. WHILE THIS PROGRAM IS ATTENDED BY OUR CONSTITUENTS, THERE IS ALSO A GREATER OUTREACH TO ANY MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC THAT ARE AT THE STATE HOUSE ON THAT DAY. THE ANNUAL ALS SYMPOSIUM INCLUDES SPEAKERS WHO PROVIDE ALS RESEARCH UPDATES AND GENERAL COPING SKILLS IN DEALING WITH THE DEVASTATION OF AN ALS DIAGNOSIS. THESE PROGRAMS ARE COMMUNICATED BY MAILINGS, SOCIAL MEDIA AND OUR WEBSITE TO OVER 1,200 CONSTITUENTS INCLUDING PATIENTS, FAMILIES, CAREGIVERS, MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AND SUPPORTERS. WE ALSO CONDUCT INSERVICE PROGRAMS TO EDUCATE MEDICAL STAFF ABOUT DEALING WITH ALS PATIENTS AT HOSPICE AND OTHER CARE FACILITIES.
