THE FUND IS ORGANIZED TO SUPPORT THE PURPOSES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE AMERICAN OPHTHALMOLOGICAL SOCIETY BY: RAISING THE STANDARDS OF MEDICAL CARE OF THE OCULAR SICK BY PROMOTING AND ADVANCING THE ART AND SCIENCE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY; ADVANCING THE ART AND PRACTICE OF OPHTHALMIC TEACHING; PROMOTING AND SUPPORTING ADVANCED STUDY AND RESEARCH IN THE FIELDS OF OCULAR AND RELATED DISEASES; AND BY PROVIDING FOR PRIZES AND MEDALS TO PERSONS EXCELLING IN ONE OR MORE OF SUCH ENDEAVORS.

THE HERMAN KNAPP FUND PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THE RESIDENT RETREAT OF THE HEED OPHTHALMIC FOUNDATION TO ENCOURAGE PURSUIT OF ACADEMIC CAREERS.
THE HERMAN KNAPP FUND SUPPORTS TRAVEL AWARDS FOR NON-MEMBER, YOUNG INVESTIGATORS FROM THEIR RESIDENCIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE AOS ANNUAL MEETING. THIS PROGRAM WAS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED DURING THE 2021 TAX YEAR DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.
