Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
FOUNDED IN 1955, THE MISSION OF THE STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY IS TO PRESERVE THE SITES, RECORDS, OBJECTS AND RELATED MATERIALS PERTAINING TO THE HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF STRAFFORD FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES AND TO APPLY THE LESSONS OF HISTORY FOR THE SOLUTION AND BETTERMENT OF THE CURRENT AFFAIRS OF SAID TOWN.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
THE STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY EMBARKED ON THE RENOVATION OF ITS NEW HOME, THE HISTORIC, 120 YEAR OLD MASONIC HALL IN SOUTH STRAFFORD. THE BUILDING WAS PURCHASED FROM THE LOCAL CHAPTER OF THE MASONS IN FEBRUARY OF 2021. BEFORE THE EXIBITS, ARTIFACTS AND DISPLAYS OF EARLY LIFE IN STRAFFORD CAN BE MOVED INTO THE BUILDING, STRUCTURAL AND HVAC IMPROVEMENTS MUST BE MADE. GRANTS AND DONATIONS WERE SOLICITED TO HELP PAY FOR STRUCTURAL REPAIRS AND A NEW ROOF, WHICH WAS COMPLETED IN NOVEMBER 2021.
DURING 2021, THE SOCIETY UPDATED AND IMPROVED THE STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY WEBSITE AT WWW.STRAFFORDHISTORY.ORG. THE WEBSITE NOW CONTAINS A BLOG, PICTURE GALLERY AND HISTORIC INFORMATION, CONTACT INFORMATION AND A WAY TO MAKE DONATIONS. THREE TO FOUR VOLUNTEERS ASSISTED WITH THIS WORK. IN ADDITION, VOLUNTEERS CONTINUED TO RESPOND TO CORRESPONDENCE AND INQUIRIES FROM PEOPLE LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR STRAFFORD ANCESTORS. THIS WORK IS COMPLICATED BY THE FACT THAT ALL OF THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY RECORDS ARE IN STORAGE PENDING THE BUILDING RENOVATION.
MEMBERS OF THE STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY AGAIN PARTICIPATED IN THE HOLIDAY BAZAAR HELD AT BARRETT HALL. THIS EVENT RAISED MONEY FOR THE SOCIETY THROUGH THE SALES OF SHS PUBLICATIONS, DONATED PAINTINGS BY HARLOW LENT, AND WITH A RAFFLE FOR A JEFFREY GALE BASKET. EIGHT VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATED IN THIS EVENT.
THE STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY HELD ITS 64TH ANNUAL MEETING WITH A PRESENTATION OF "FROM THE PARLOR TO THE POLLING PLACE" WITH GUEST SPEAKER LINDA RATKE SPEAKEING AND SINGING ABOUT THE SUFFRAGETTE MOVEMENT. ABOUT THIRTY PEOPLE ATTENTED THE EVENT.
