FRIENDS OF BAXTER STATE PARK STRIVES TO INSPIRE PASSION FOR THE PARK'S WILD CHARACTER IN THE SPIRIT OF PERCIVAL BAXTER. WE PROMOTE EXEMPLARY USE, NATURAL RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP, AND A HEALTHY KATAHDIN REGION TO ENSURE THE PARK FOREVER REMAINS A REFUGE.

SUPPORT FOR PARK ACTIVITIES: WE OFFERED OUR BAXTER YOUTH CONSERVATION CORPS (BYCC) IN MODIFIED FORM IN 2021 DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. WE HIRED EIGHT FULL-TIME BYCC CONSERVATION FELLOWS WHO WORKED FULL TIME FOR SIX WEEKS AND COMPLETED APPROXIMATELY 1,920 HOURS OF SERVICE LEARNING FOCUSED ON BAXTER STATE PARK. WE CONTRIBUTED $3,481 TO BAXTER STATE PARK, WHICH REPRESENTS 50% OF THE NET PROCEEDS FROM OUR ANNUAL FUNDRAISING SIGN AUCTION.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH: WE OFFERED THE 2021 MAINE YOUTH WILDERNESS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM WHICH ENABLES EIGHT MAINE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE A NINE-DAY LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM IN SPECTACULAR WILDERNESS. PARTICIPANTS IN THIS PROGRAM LEARN FROM SPECIALISTS IN SCIENCE, ART, STORYTELLING, NATIVE CULTURE, WRITING, HISTORY, AND RECREATION. THE GOAL OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO INSPIRE AND CULTIVATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF MAINE'S ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS. WE PUBLISHED TWO ISSUES OF OUR FOREVER WILD NEWSLETTER WITH A CIRCULATION OF 2,000 (1,400 PRINT, 600 DIGITAL) PER ISSUE. WE PRODUCED THE 2022 BAXTER STATE PARK CALENDAR IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BAXTER STATE PARK AND A LOCAL PUBLISHING COMPANY. WE HOSTED A VIRTUAL 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON SEPTEMBER 9 THAT WAS ATTENDED BY APPROXIMATELY 85 PEOPLE. WE PUBLISHED A SPECIAL, 32-PAGE COMMEMORATIVE PUBLICATION CALLED "TWO DECADES OF FOREVER WILD" IN HONOR OF OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY. WE OFFERED PUBLIC ZOOM PRESENTATIONS BY OUR BYCC CONSERVATION FELLOWS ON AUGUST 11 AND 12 THAT WERE ATTENDED BY 63 PEOPLE. WE PRODUCED A NEW PODCAST FOCUSED ON FISHERIES MANAGEMENT IN BAXTER STATE PARK CALLED "GETTIN' REEL ABOUT BAXTER WITH SILVIA HARTT", AND LAUNCHED IT ON APPLE PODCASTS. WE LAUNCHED A NEW INFORMATIONAL VIDEO SERIES CALLED "HOW TO BAXTER" AND PUBLISHED TWO VIDEOS TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL.
ADVOCACY FOR THE PARK: WE ATTENDED FOUR MEETINGS OF THE BAXTER STATE PARK AUTHORITY, TWO MEETINGS OF THE KATAHDIN COLLABORATIVE, TWELVE MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPS OF FIRST LIGHT LEARNING JOURNEY, AND TWO MEETINGS OF THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL TASK FORCE. WE FUNDED AND DISTRIBUTED BROCHURES AND OUTREACH MATERIALS THROUGH THE MAINE TOURISM ASSOCIATION. WE MONITORED SEVERAL ONGOING POLICY CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FACING BAXTER STATE PARK.
