TO ENCOURAGE THE SHARING AND ENJOYMENT OF THE LONG HISTORY OF FREEPORT, MAINE.

FREEPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY ACTIVELY PRESERVES BUILDINGS, ARCHIVAL MATERIALS, AND ARTIFACTS OF HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE WHILE ENCOURAGING SIMILAR EFFORTS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY; UNDERTAKES RESEARCH AND DEVELOPS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND EXHIBITS WHICH EXPLORE AND INTERPRET FREEPORT'S HISTORY; AND ENCOURAGES RELATED COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES WHICH KEEP FREEPORT'S RICH PAST PRESENT. IN 2021, THE ORGANIZATION FOCUSED ON ITS SIGNIFICANT RENOVATION AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECT AT ITS MAIN STREET LOCATION. THE HISTORIC CARRIAGE HOUSE WAS RESET ON A NEW FOUNDATION AND FLOOR SYSTEM, AND A NEW NONCOMBUSTIBLE ARCHIVAL STORAGE VAULT WAS BUILD BEHIND THE HISTORIC HOME THAT HOUSES OFFICES AND EXHIBITS. THE ENTIRE ARCHIVAL COLLECTION AND OTHER MATERIAL COLLECTIONS WERE EVALUATED IN PREPARATION FOR THE MOVE TO THE NEW VAULT, AND A CUSTOM HIGH-DENSITY SHELVING SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED AND INSTALLED TO HOLD THESE COLLECTIONS. CAPITAL FUNDRAISING TO SUPPORT THIS PROJECT CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. MONTHLY PUBLIC PROGRAMS WERE HELD ONLINE TO ENGAGE COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN THE MIDST OF CONTINUED PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS. OUTDOOR PROGRAMS RESUMED, INCLUDING WALKING TOURS, SCHOOL VISITS TO THE PETTENGILL FARM HISTORIC SITE, AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY EVENT PETTENGILL FARM DAY.
