PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES, FOCUSED TOWARD YOUTH, THROUGH THE OPERATION OF A COMPREHENSIVE RANGE OF COMMUNITY-BASED INTER-WOVEN ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING AN ORGANIC FARM, COLLEGE DEGREE PROGRAMS, INTERNSHIPS, AND IN SCHOOL CURRICULUM BASED CLASSES.

OUR MISSION IS TO GROW EMPOWERED YOUTH LEADERSHIP FOR A JUST, HEALTHY, SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT COMMUNITY FOOD SYSTEM. TO THAT END, WE PROVIDE YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING (YLT) PROGRAMS IN WHICH YOUTH WORK IN THE ORGANIC FARM ENTERPRISE AND IN RETURN FOR THAT SWEAT EQUITY THEY ARE PROVIDED FULL TUITION TO OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE WHILE EARNING EDUCATIONAL STIPENDS. IN 2021, THE ENTIRETY OF THE 'AUWAI (EDUCATIONAL & ENTREPRENURIAL PATHWAY) PROGRAMMING SAW PARTICIPATION FROM APPROXIMATELY 193 YOUTH (5.5% INCREASE OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR). THERE WERE 65 IN OUR HIGH SCHOOL YLT, 53 IN OUR SUMMER RAMP UP AND WINTER RAMP UP PROGRAMS, 5 IN OUR HO'OWAIWAI YLT AND 61 CONTINUING YLT INTERNS.DESPITE THE ON-GOING CHALLENGES OF THE PANDEMIC IN 2021, THE PROGRAM MAINTAINED ITS ENGAGEMENT, PARTICIPATION AND MATRICULATION OF YOUTH WITHIN THE LEADERSHIP PATHWAY DUE TO THE CONTINUED WRAP-AROUND SUPPORTS INCLUDING ONE-ON-ONE COUNSELING, OLA (HEALTH AND WELL-BEING) ACTIVITIES, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES, AND CONTINUED CAPACITY BUILDING OF ELDER INTERNS.IN 2021, A TOTAL OF 35 YLT PARTICIPANTS (15 CURRENT YLT, 20 ALUMNI) RECEIVED 40 COLLEGE DEGREES TO INCLUDE; 6 - ACADEMIC SUBJECT CERTIFICATES, 4 - CERTIFICATES OF ACHIEVEMENT, 7 - CERTIFICATES OF ACHIEVEMENTS, 10 - ASSOCIATE OF ARTS DEGREES, 1 - ASSOCIATES OF APPLIED SCIENCE, 2 - BACHELORS OF APPLIED SCIENCE, 7 - BACHELOR OF ARTS, 1 - MASTERS OF SOCIAL WORK AND 1 - MASTERS OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION. THE TWO BACHELORS OF APPLIED SCIENCE IN SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY FOOD SYSTEMS DEGREE EARNERS ARE MA'O STAFF MEMBERS LYNN BATTEN AND FLAME PORTER - BOTH OF WHOM WERE YLT MEMBERS IN COHORTS 9 AND 12.5. OF THE 35 YLT DEGREE EARNERS, 30 OF THE YLT ARE GRADUATES OF WAI'ANAE MOKU (REGION) SCHOOLS AND 86% OF GRADUATES ARE OF NATIVE HAWAIIAN OR PACIFIC ISLANDER DESCENT HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PROGRAM SUPPORTING, MATRICULATING AND GRADUATING VULNERABLE POPULATIONS OF YOUTH TO ACHIEVE POST-SECONDARY DEGREES.
