Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
OUR MISSION IS TO FIND LOVING HOMES FOR RESCUED DOGS, MOSTLY RACETRACK GREYHOUNDS, BUT ALSO NON-RACERS AND GREYHOUND MIXES. OUR GOAL IS TO SAVE AS MANY DOGS AS WE CAN WHILE MAINTAINING A QUALITY PROGRAM FOCUSED ON EACH INDIVIDUAL DOG AND PROSPECTIVE ADOPTERS' NEEDS. TO THIS END, WE SERVE AS ADVOCATES FOR EACH PERSON ADOPTING AND EACH DOG WELCOMED INTO THEIR HOME AS FAMILY.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
SHELTER AND ADOPTION PROGRAM: WE SAVE DOGS DISCARDED BY THE DOG RACING INDUSTRY. ONCE THE DOGS HAVE GONE THROUGH OUR EXTENSIVE MEDICAL REGIMEN WHICH INCLUDES A COMPLETE WORKUP FROM BLOOD TESTS AND VACCINATIONS TO NEUTERING/SPAYING AND DENTISTRY THEN THE DOGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION. WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT ADOPTIVE FAMILIES RECEIVE HEALTHY PETS AND WE TAKE THE ADOPTION PROCESS EVEN FURTHER BY HELPING ADOPTERS CHOOSE A WELL-MATCHED DOG WHO BEST SUITS THEIR LIFESTYLE AND THEIR NEEDS. WE TAKE CARE TO EVALUATE EACH DOG, CREATING A PROFILE THAT WE THEN COMPLEMENT WITH AN ADOPTER'S PROFILE, WHICH HAS BEEN PREPARED BY A TRAINED VOLUNTEER. WE OPERATE AN ADOPTION CENTER THAT HOUSES 50 DOGS. WE KEEP THE AIR CONDITIONING RUNNING DURING THE HOT SAN DIEGO SUMMERS, AND WE KEEP THE DOGS WARM IN THE WINTER. OUR FACILITY IS LICENSED, CLEAN AND WELL-MAINTAINED; OUR DOGS ARE SECURE AND COMFORTABLE. WE MANAGE EXPENSES IN A PROFESSIONAL, BUSINESSLIKE MANNER. IN 2021, GAC SHELTERED BETWEEN 45 AND 54 DOGS AT A TIME IN THE SHELTER AND IN FOSTER HOMES. 48 DOGS WERE TAKEN INTO THE SHELTER DURING THE YEAR, 51 WERE ADOPTED, 2 DOGS DIED OR WERE EUTHANIZED WHILE AT GAC. EUTHANIZED ANIMALS WERE PRIMARILY DUE TO CANCER CONDITIONS IN OLDER DOGS. SPAY AND NEUTER SURGERIES TOTALED 47 IN 2021, AND 45 HOUNDS WERE SHELTERED AT DECEMBER 31, 2021 WITH ANOTHER 21 IN FOSTER HOMES. THERE IS A WAITING LIST OF ADOPTERS APPROVED FOR GREYHOUNDS DUE TO A BACKLOG OF GREYHOUNDS REQUIRING SPAY/NEUTER AND MEDICAL ATTENTION.
SPECIALTY MEDICAL PROGRAM: PROVIDES SPECIALTY MEDICAL TREATMENT AND CARE FOR THE GROWING NUMBER OF RACING GREYHOUNDS WHO WERE SEVERELY INJURED WHEN RESCUED PRIMARILY DUE TO POOR RACING TRACK CONDITIONS CAUSING FALLS, COLLISIONS, AND OTHER ACCIDENTS. SPECIALTY MEDICAL CARE PROVIDES SPECIALIZED VETERINARY TREATMENT FOR GREYHOUNDS WITH SEVERELY BROKEN BONES, AMPUTATIONS, AND OTHER DIRE PHYSICAL INJURIES AND ILLNESSES SUSTAINED PRIOR TO RESCUE BY GAC. GAC IS THE LIFELINE FOR THESE GREYHOUNDS WHO ARE TYPICALLY CONSIDERED TOO EXPENSIVE TO RESCUE FOR THE MAJORITY OF GREYHOUND RESCUE ORGANIZATIONS. GREYHOUNDS REQUIRING SPECIALTY MEDICAL TREATMENT TOTALED 11 IN 2021. MEDICAL CONDITIONS INCLUDED EYE PROBLEMS, BROKEN BONES (SOMETIMES REQUIRING AMPUTATION OF LIMBS), INTERNAL MEDICAL ISSUES, HEART CONDITIONS, AND SEIZURES. GAC PROVIDED FUNDS THAT TOTALED 15,593 FOR THE TREATMENT OF SPECIALTY MEDICAL CONDITIONS.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: INCLUDES THE CANINE SPORTS CENTER AGILITY FIELD THAT IS AVAILABLE FOR USE BY SHELTER DOGS, AND MEMBERS. THE RUN FREE FIELD IS USED BY SHELTER DOGS AND CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS TO HAVE A PLACE FOR THEIR ADOPTED GREYHOUNDS TO RUN UNLEASHED.
