RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA OWNS AND OPERATES A 27-BEDROOM HOUSE IN TUCSON, ARIZONA THAT PROVIDES TEMPORARY HOUSING FOR FAMILIES OF SERIOUSLY ILL CHILDREN WHO MUST LEAVE THEIR COMMUNITIES TO SEEK MEDICAL CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN. THE HOUSE SERVES FAMILIES OF CHILDREN RECEIVING TREATMENT AT BANNER UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER, TUCSON MEDICAL CENTER, CARONDELET ST. JOSEPH'S HOSPITAL, AND OTHER CLINICS IN THE TUCSON AREA. IN 2020, 198 FAMILIES STAYED AT THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE FOR A TOTAL OF 2,237 "FAMILY NIGHTS".FAMILIES OF SERIOUSLY ILL CHILDREN AGE 21 AND UNDER ARE ELIGIBLE TO STAY AT THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE. THEY CAN BE REFERRED TO THE HOUSE BY A SOCIAL WORKER, NURSE, DOCTOR, OR OTHER MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AND BE UNDERGOING INPATIENT OR OUTPATIENT CARE. THERE IS NO CHARGE TO OUR FAMILIES TO STAY AT THE HOUSE. THE HOUSE IS ALSO AN APPROVED LODGING FACILITY FOR FAMILIES COVERED BY ARIZONA'S MEDICAID PROGRAM (AHCCCS).THE HOUSE IS OPERATED WITH 12 FULL-TIME AND 3 PART-TIME STAFF EMPLOYEES. A POOL OF VOLUNTEERS ASSISTS WITH THE DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS BY PROVIDING OFFICE ASSISTANCE, LIGHT HOUSEKEEPING, AND SIMPLE MAINTENANCE JOBS. FOR 2020, THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE IN TUCSON HAD APPROXIMATELY 195 VOLUNTEERS HELPING TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND WELCOMING "HOME AWAY FROM HOME" FOR THE FAMILIES.
THE RONALD MCDONALD FAMILY ROOM AT BANNER CHILDREN'S DIAMOND CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER EXTENDS OF THE SERVICES OF RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA. THE FAMILY ROOM SERVES ALL PEDIATRIC IN-PATIENT FAMILIES AT DIAMOND CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER. IT IS A SPECIAL PLACE WITHIN THE HOSPITAL, NEAR THE NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT, WHERE FAMILIES CAN RELAX AND REGROUP WHILE STILL BEING CLOSE TO THEIR CHILD. DURING 2020, WE SAW 9,867 VISITS TO THE FAMILY ROOM. WE CLOSED THE RM FAMILY ROOM ON MARCH 13, 2020, DUE TO COVID-19 AND IT REMAINED CLOSED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
IN 2019, WE LAUNCHED THE RONALD MCDONALD CARE MOBILE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHIRICAHUA COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS, INC. (CCHCI) TO BRING DENTAL CARE TO CHILDREN IN COCHISE COUNTY. CCHCI STOPPED SERVICES ON THE RMCM ON MARCH 12, BECAUSE OF COVID-19, AND RESUMED ON JUNE 1, 2020 WITH APPROPRIATE PUBLIC HEALTH PROTECTIONS AND APPROVAL FROM RMHC GLOBAL. DESPITE THE PANDEMIC, OUR CLINICAL SERVICE PROVIDERS REPORTED 785 DENTAL VISITS (MOST OF THESE ARE CHILDREN WHO WOULD OTHERWISE NOT BE ABLE TO SEE A DENTIST) AND 503 HEALTH EDUCATION VISITS.
