PROVIDES PHILANTHROPIC PROGRAMS THROUGH VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES BASED ON THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY.

OPERATION SCHOOL BELL - PROVIDED CLOTHING AND SHOES FOR 500 CHILDREN FROM LOW INCOME FAMILIES IN ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE GLENDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. MANY OF THESE STUDENTS WERE REFERRED BY THE GUSD WELLNESS CENTER SERVING HOMELESS AND FOSTER CHILDREN. THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN RECEIVED THREE SETS OF SCHOOL UNIFORMS (PANTS, SHORTS OR SKIRTS, FIVE T-SHIRTS, A FLEECE JACKET, A WEEKS WORTH OF UNDERWEAR AND SOCKS, A HYGIENE KIT CONTAINING A COMB, HAIR-BRUSH, SOAP, TOOTHBRUSH AND TOOTHPASTE, AND A $55 SHOE VOUCHER ALL PACKED IN A DUFFLE BAG. MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVED A GIFT CARD FOR CLOTHING, A VOUCHER FOR NEW SHOES AND A HYGIENE KIT. ASSISTEENS PROVIDED ONE BOOK/ELEMENTARY STUDENT.


AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS - IN THIS PROGRAM, UNIQUE TO ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF GLENDALE, 2098 STUDENTS IN FOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WELCOMED CHILDRENS BOOK AUTHORS OR ILLUSTRATORS. THE PRESENTERS SHARED HOW THEY STARTED WRITING OR ILLUSTRATING BOOKS AND HOW THEIR MANUSCRIPTS WERE MARKED IN RED BY EDITORS. THE CHILDREN LEARNED THAT THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO MUST REWRITE THEIR WORK TO IMPROVE IT. OFTEN, PRESENTERS START A STORY WITH THE CHILDREN, OUTLINE A CHARACTER, GIVE THEM A PROBLEM TO SOLVE, AND THEN LEAVE THE STORY UNFINISHED FOR STUDENTS TO COMPLETE IN CLASS. THIS FITS WELL WITH THE SCHOOLS COMMON CORE STANDARDS. ALSO, EACH SCHOOL RECEIVED $2,500 TO BUY NEW BOOKS FOR THEIR LIBRARY.


SENIOR NEIGHBORHOOD FELLOWSHIP ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF GLENDALE PROVIDED A MONTHLY SOCIAL GATHERING COMPLETE WITH LUNCH AND ENTERTAINMENT FOR MEN AND WOMEN 55 YEARS AND OLDER. 744 SENIORS WERE SERVED AT THE LUNCHEONS THIS YEAR. ASSISTEENS PROVIDED 80 FAVORS/MONTH FOR ATTENDEES
