OPERATION SCHOOL BELL PROVIDED NEW SCHOOL CLOTHING TO 433 CHILDREN FROM LOW INCOME FAMILIES IN ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOLS. THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN RECEIVED THREE SETS OF SCHOOL UNIFORMS (PANTS, SHORTS OR SKIRTS, FIVE T-SHIRTS, A FLEECE JACKET, A WEEKS WORTH OF UNDERWEAR AND SOCKS, A HEALTH KIT CONTAINING A COMB, HAIR-BRUSH, SOAP, TOOTHBRUSH AND TOOTHPASTE, AND A $30 SHOE VOUCHER ALL PACKED IN A DUFFLE BAG. OUR PROGRAM INCLUDED 74 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO RECEIVED GIFT CARDS FOR CLOTHING AND SHOES. ALSO, 72 HOMELESS MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVED GIFT CARDS FOR CLOTHING AND SHOES.
AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS - IN THIS PROGRAM, UNIQUE TO ASSISTANCE LEAGUE GLENDALE, 2295 STUDENTS IN FOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WELCOMED CHILDRENS BOOK AUTHORS OR ILLUSTRATORS FOR A VIRTUAL PRESENTATION. THE PRESENTERS SHARED HOW THEY STARTED WRITING OR ILLUSTRATING BOOKS AND HOW THEIR MANUSCRIPTS WERE MARKED IN RED BY EDITORS. THE CHILDREN LEARNED THAT THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO MUST REWRITE THEIR WORK TO IMPROVE IT. OFTEN, PRESENTERS START A STORY WITH THE CHILDREN, OUTLINE A CHARACTER, GIVE THEM A PROBLEM TO SOLVE, AND THEN LEAVE THE STORY UNFINISHED FOR STUDENTS TO COMPLETE IN CLASS. THIS FITS WELL WITH THE SCHOOLS COMMON CORE STANDARDS. ALSO, EACH SCHOOL RECEIVED $2,000 TO BUY NEW BOOKS FOR THEIR LIBRARY
SCHOLARSHIPS ASSISTANCE LEAGUE GLENDALE AWARDED EIGHT $2,000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS OR CONTINUING COLLEGE STUDENTS. THE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE BASED ON COMMUNITY SERVICE, SCHOOL LEADERSHIP AND GRADE-POINT AVERAGE. RECIPIENTS ARE PUBLICIZED THROUGH OUR WEBSITE AND LOCAL NEWSPAPERS AND WERE HONORED AT A JUNE AWARD LUNCHEON.
