Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
THE HORTICULTURE PROGRAM CURATES, INSTALLS, AND MAINTAINS THE GARDEN'S LIVING COLLECTION WHICH ENCOMPASSES 78-ACRES OF NATIVE PLANTS INDICATIVE OF THE CALIFORNIA FLORISTIC PROVIDENCE AS WELL AS HISTORIC LANDMARKS DATING BACK TO 1806. THE PROGRAM ENSURES GUESTS, EXPERIENCE SEASONAL WILDFLOWER DISPLAYS, ECOSYSTEM-THEMED TRAILS THAT WALK ACROSS CA FROM DESERT TO REDWOOD, AND GARDENS THAT CELEBRATE TAXONOMIC DIVERSITY FROM RARE SPECIES TO ICONIC FIXTURES SUCH AS THE CA POPPY. NEWER GARDEN EXHIBITS EXPLORE "PLANTING WITH PURPOSE" THEMES SUCH AS WATER CONSERVATION, ATTRACTING WILDLIFE, AND FOOD GARDENING COMPANION PLANTING. THE PROGRAM STAFF ALSO MANAGES 2 PLANT NURSERIES - 1 OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND 1 SUPPORTING CONSERVATION AND THE REGENERATION OF THE LIVING COLLECTION.
WITH NATIVE PLANTS AND HABITATS AT ITS CORE, THE CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH PROGRAM FOCUSES ON SOLUTIONS TO TODAY'S COMPLEX CONSERVATION CHALLENGES - FROM GENES TO ECOSYSTEMS. WITH A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS, TECHNICIANS, PARTNERS, AND BUDDING CONSERVATION LEADERS, THE PROGRAM WORKS COLLABORATIVELY TO UNDERSTAND, PROTECT, AND RESTORE CALIFORNIA'S DIVERSE BOTANIC ECOSYSTEMS. IN RESPONSE, THE TEAM PRODUCES ESSENTIAL PLANT INVENTORIES AND RESEARCH, SAFEGUARDS ENDANGERED PLANT SPECIES, AND SECURES CONSERVATION COLLECTIONS OF SEEDS, LIVING PLANTS, AND GENETIC TISSUE FOR STUDY - AND POTENTIAL RECOVERY IN THE EVENT OF A TRAGEDY.
THE EDUCATION PROGRAM AT THE GARDEN SUPPORTS THE MISSION OF CONSERVING CALIFORNIA'S NATIVE PLANTS BY INSPIRING LEARNING, ENGAGEMENT, AND ACTION. THE GARDEN GROUNDS PROVIDE A UNIQUE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM WHOSE DIVERSE COLLECTIONS OF NATIVE PLANTS SUPPORT A WIDE ARRAY OF EXPERIENCES IN NATURE. BY ENGAGING A DIVERSE CONSTITUENCY THROUGH LECTURES, ON AND OFF-SITE CLASSES, SYMPOSIUMS, DOCENT-LED TOURS, AND SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS, WE FACILITATE CONNECTIONS TO THE NATURAL WORLD AND FOSTER A PROFOUND AWARENESS OF NATIVE PLANTS.SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS AGES FIVE TO 10 ENABLE EXPLORATION AND UNDERSTANDING OF NATURE THROUGH ART, SCIENCE, AND HORTICULTURE, ASKING THEM TO OBSERVE, RECORD, AND PREDICT NATURAL PHENOMENA. THESE POPULAR PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO ALIGN WITH THE CALIFORNIA COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS, CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INITIATIVE & NEXT-GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS.
