THE SANTA CRUZ SPCA PROVIDES SAFE HARBOR FOR ANIMALS IN NEED AND PROMOTES AN ACTIVE HUMANE COMMUNITY THROUGH ADOPTION, ADVOCACY, AND EDUCATION.

GENERAL SHELTER OPERATIONS PROVIDE FOR HUMANE CARE OF ANIMALS WHILE WAITING FOR ADOPTION. ADOPTION FEES ARE COLLECTED TO OFFSET THE COST OF THE ANIMAL'S DAILY CARE, ENRICHMENT AND TRAINING, SPAY/NEUTER SURGERIES, VACCINATIONS, MICROCHIPS AND OTHER MEDICAL NEEDS. A TOTAL OF 215 ADOPTIONS OCCURRED DURING THE FISCAL YEAR 2020-2021. AS AN ESSENTIAL BUSINESS, WE CONTINUED OUR CORE MISSION OF PROVIDING SAFE HARBOR AND ADOPTING HOMELESS ANIMALS DESPITE THE PANDEMIC.
SECOND CHANCE FUND ENABLES THE SCSPCA TO PROVIDE EXTENSIVE VETERINARY AND/OR BEHAVIORAL CARE FOR SICK, INJURED, ABUSED OR NEGLECTED ANIMALS WHO WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE TO BE EUTHANIZED AT OTHER NONPROFIT ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS LACKING CRITICAL RESOURCES TO INVEST IN SAVEABLE ANIMALS.
DR. JEAN'S SENIOR FRIENDS (FORMERLY KNOWN AS BLACKIE'S SENIOR FUND) PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO SENIOR CITIZENS WHO ADOPT PETS BY WAIVING THE ADOPTION FEE WHEN A QUALIFYING SENIOR PERSON ADOPTS A SENIOR ANIMAL. THE PROGRAM ALSO ASSISTS SENIORS IN CARING FOR THEIR COMPANION PETS BY PROVIDING VETERINARY CARE AND OTHER VITAL SERVICES TO SENIORS WHO NOT OTHERWISE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE THAT CARE FOR THEIR PETS. THIS PROGRAM ENCOURAGES SENIOR CITIZENS TO ADOPT SENIOR PETS, AND PREVENTS SENIORS FROM HAVING TO SURRENDER THEIR PETS TO ANIMAL SHELTERS DUE TO FINANCIAL HARDSHIP.
