SSP OPERATES RESIDENTIAL SUMMER PROGRAMS IN HANDS-ON SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR TALENTED TEENAGERS.

Part 3 - Line 4a
IN 2022, 204 TEENAGERS PARTICIPATED IN THE SUMMER SCIENCE PROGRAM. THREE GROUPS OF 36 DID RESEARCH IN ASTROPHYSICS: EACH TEAM OF THREE IMAGED A NEAR-EARTH ASTEROID AND ANALYZED THEIR IMAGES TO PREDICT ITS FUTURE ORBIT. TWO GROUPS OF 36 DID RESEARCH IN BIOCHEMISTRY: EACH TEAM OF THREE MODELED AN ENZYME FROM A FUNGAL CROP PATHOGEN AND DESIGNED A SMALL MOLECULE INHIBITOR AS A POSSIBLE SAFE FUNGICIDE. ONE GROUP OF 24 USED CHEMOSTAT DEVICES TO EVOLVE ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN BACTERIA AND ANALYZE THE RESULTING MUTATIONS. THE PROGRAMS WERE 39 DAYS IN DURATION, LED BY 43 FACULTY, AND HELD IN PERSON ON FIVE COLLEGE CAMPUSES IN FOUR STATES, INCLUDING NEW HOST COLLEGES INDIANA UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHAPEL HILL.
