PUBLICATIONSLEONARDO/ISAST SERVES AS A CRITICAL CONTENT PROVIDER THROUGH OUR PUBLICATIONS PROGRAM SCHOLARLY JOURNALS PUBLISHED BY MIT PRESS (LEONARDO), THE LEONARDO BOOK SERIES (MIT PRESS), AND THE LEONARDO FAMILY OF WEBSITES AND EXPERIMENTAL PROJECTS ON EVOLVING DIGITAL PLATFORMS. LEONARDO IS PUBLISHED SIX TIMES PER YEAR. FOUR NEW TITLES WERE PUBLISHED IN THE BOOK SERIES IN 2021, BRINGING THE TOTAL CATALOG TO 71, INCLUDING "A BIOGRAPHY OF. THE PIXEL" BY ALVY RAY SMITH, ONE THE FOUNDERS OF PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIO.


CRIPTECH INCUBATORLEONARDO LAUNCHED CRIPTECH INCUBATOR IN 2021. CRIPTECH INCUBATOR IS AN ART-AND-TECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIP CENTERED ON DISABILITY INNOVATION. ENCOMPASSING RESIDENCIES, WORKSHOPS, PRESENTATIONS, PUBLICATION AND EDUCATION, THIS INNOVATION INCUBATOR CREATES A PLATFORM FOR DISABLED ARTISTS TO ENGAGE AND REMAKE CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH THE LENS OF ACCESSIBILITY. EMPLOYING A BROAD UNDERSTANDING OF TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDING PROSTHETIC TOOLS, NEURAL NETWORKS, SOFTWARE, AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT, 2021 WAS FOCUSED ON PLANNING: CONVENING PARTNER RESIDENCIES (SBCAST, BERKELEY DISABILITY RADMAD LAB, BEALL CENTER FOR ART AND TECHNOLOGY AND THOUGHTWORKS ARTS) AND CONDUCTING ACCESS EDUCATION, PROGRAM DESIGN WITH DISABLED COMMUNITY PARTNERS, COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND INFORMATION SESSIONS, AN ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS THROUGH A JURIED OPEN CALL. BY THE END OF 2021, 6 ARTISTS HAD BEEN SELECTED.


RESIDENCY + FELLOWSHIP COLLABORATIONSDUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE ANNUAL LEONARDO AT DJERASSI ARTIST/SCIENTIST RESIDENCY THAT BRINGS TOGETHER ARTISTS AND SCIENTISTS FOR A MONTH-LONG RETREAT IN THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS WAS DEFERRED UNTIL 2022. SEIZE THE MOMENT, AN INITIATIVE OF LEONARDO, THE HUMANITIES LAB, AND THE GLOBAL FUTURES LABORATORY AT ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, WAS LAUNCHED IN 2021 WITH THE LEONARDO LAB SERIES; TOPICS INCLUDED HUMANIZING DIGITAL CULTURE, AND ARTSCIENCE COVID RESPONSE. LEONARDO ALSO RECEIVED A CREATIVE WORK FUND GRANT TO COLLABORATE WITH IAN WINTERS ON HIS NETWORKED MEDIA INSTALLATION DOMESTIC LIGHT.
