THE PURPOSE OF THIS CHAPTER IS TO PROMOTE AND ENHANCE ARCHITECTURE AND THE PROFESSION OF ARCHITECTURE WITHIN THE TERRITORY OF AIA SAN FRANCISCO AND TO PROMOTE AND FORWARD THE OBJECTIVES OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES INCLUDED A'23 CONVENTION, DESIGN AWARDS, HOUSING AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUMS, AND CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR OFFICE RELOCATION PROJECT. AIASF CONTRACT MOU WITH CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN FOR STAFF AND OPERATIONS SERVICING.

A'23 AIA CONVENTION:THE A'23 CONFERENCE ON ARCHITECTURE, HELD FROM JUNE 7TH TO 10TH IN SAN FRANCISCO, ATTRACTED NEARLY 16,000 PROFESSIONALS, OFFERING A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE THE CITY'S CULTURE, INNOVATION, AND BEAUTY. WITH OVER 4,500 ATTENDEES ACROSS 118 TOURS, INCLUDING WALKING, BUS, BOAT, AND BIKE TOURS, AND 600 PARTICIPANTS IN OPEN STUDIO NIGHT, THE EVENT HIGHLIGHTED THE BEST OF THE ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN INDUSTRY. THE CHAPTER RAISED SIGNIFICANT FUNDS, WITH AUTODESK SUPPORTING KEY EVENTS AND A SUSTAINABILITY BUS TOUR SHOWCASING AWARD-WINNING CLIMATE ACTION PROJECTS. OVERALL, A'23 SUCCESSFULLY CONNECTED GLOBAL PROFESSIONALS WHILE EMPHASIZING SAN FRANCISCO'S LEADERSHIP IN DESIGN AND SUSTAINABILITY.
MEMBER SERVICES:AIA SAN FRANCISCO OFFERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL AS PUBLIC FORUM, TOURS AND LECTURES, THAT PROVIDE ARCHITECTS AND DESIGN ENTHUSIASTS WITH NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE THE LOCALLY BUILT ENVIRONMENT. OWING TO COVID, THERE WERE REMOTE MONTHLY MEETINGS AND VIRTUAL PROGRAMS AND FEW IN PERSON EVENTS ORGANIZED BY 19 KNOWLEDGE COMMUNITIES. OVER 1900 ATTEND THESE EVENTS. PROGRAMS ARE PRIMARILY GEARED TO AIA SF MEMBER ARCHITECTS IN NEED OF VALUABLE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CREDIT AND INDUSTRY INSIGHTS.
THE DESIGN AWARDS PROGRAM:THE 2023 AIASF DESIGN AWARDS TOOK PLACE ON MAY 4 AT THE HISTORIC HERBST THEATRE AND GREEN ROOM IN SAN FRANCISCO'S WAR MEMORIAL & PERFORMING ARTS CENTER. THE EVENT CELEBRATED THE BEST IN ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN FROM THE BAY AREA, DRAWING OVER 200 PROFESSIONALS, AIASF MEMBERS, AND INDUSTRY AFFILIATES. THIS ANNUAL PROGRAM RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE IN THE DESIGN COMMUNITY, AWARDING PROJECTS THAT REFLECT INNOVATION AND HIGH DESIGN STANDARDS.FOR 2023, 20 PROJECTS WERE RECOGNIZED ACROSS CATEGORIES INCLUDING ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE, UNBUILT DESIGN, AND OTHER SPECIAL AREAS. THE SELECTION PROCESS WAS CONDUCTED VIRTUALLY BY A PRESTIGIOUS JURY OF RENOWNED ARCHITECTS: JONATHAN MOODY(MOODY NOLAN), KATHERINE CHIA (DESAI CHIA ARCHITECTURE), KEVIN DALY (KEVIN DALY ARCHITECTS), MERYATI BLACKWELL (MARLON BLACKWELL ARCHITECTS), AND TAKASHI YANAI (EHRLICH YANAI RHEE CHANEY ARCHITECTS). THE JURORS BROUGHT DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES TO EVALUATE THE PROJECTS, FOCUSING ON INNOVATION, SUSTAINABILITY, AND POSITIVE COMMUNITY IMPACT.
HOME TOURS: THE AIASF HOME TOURS PROGRAM, LAUNCHED IN SAN FRANCISCO IN 2004, IS THE BAY AREA'S FIRST TOUR SERIES SHOWCASING DIVERSE ARCHITECTURAL STYLES AND RESIDENCES FROM THE ARCHITECT'S PERSPECTIVE. FEATURING AN OPEN HOUSE FORMAT, THE TOURS ALLOW PARTICIPANTS TO EXPLORE SOME OF THE REGION'S LATEST PROJECTS, MEET DESIGN TEAMS, AND DISCOVER INNOVATIVE HOUSING TRENDS AND DESIGN SOLUTIONS THAT ENHANCE DAILY LIVING. THE PROGRAM AIMS TO CELEBRATE EXCEPTIONAL DESIGN, RAISE AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION FOR ARCHITECTURE, AND ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY IN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT RESIDENTIAL DESIGN AND ITS CONNECTION TO THE ENVIRONMENT. IT ALSO PROVIDES INSIGHTS INTO THE DESIGN PROCESS THROUGH PRE-TOUR LECTURES AND INTERACTIONS WITH ARCHITECTS, WHILE HIGHLIGHTING THE POSITIVE IMPACTS OF DESIGN ON THE ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT, AND COMMUNITY IDENTITY, INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARCHITECTS. THIS YEAR'S FEATURED ARCHITECTS SHOWCASE INNOVATIVE RESIDENTIAL DESIGNS THAT BLEND SUSTAINABILITY WITH UNIQUE AESTHETICS, INCLUDING LEXIE MORK-ULNES' CHARRED VICTORIAN, JOHN LUM'S MODERNIZED MID-CENTURY HOME AT GOLDEN GATE HEIGHTS, ERIC DUMICAN'S EXPANDED RUSSIAN HILL RESIDENCE, AND KAREN CURTISS' RELOCATED URBAN SHELTER.
