Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2003, UP HAS BECOME TILLAMOOK COUNTYS TRUSTED RESOURCE FOR ALL ANIMAL WELFARE MATTERS. ITS OVERRIDING MISSION IS TO PREVENT AND ALLEVIATE COMPANION ANIMAL SUFFERING. UP ADDRESSES THE PROBLEMS FACING A LARGE LOW INCOME RESIDENT POPULATION WITH PET FOOD AND VETERINARY EXPENSE HELP AND TO FOCUS ON LONGER-TERM CHANGE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF ALL COMPANION ANIMALS BY TACKLING THE ROOT CAUSE OF SUCH SUFFERING -- OVERPOPULATION. THROUGH AGGRESSIVE, HIGH-VOLUME TARGETED SPAY/NEUTER WORK ESPECIALLY OF PET AND ESPECIALLY OUTDOOR CATS, OUR COMPLEMENTARY SUCCESSFUL FOSTER/ADOPTION PROGRAM AND AN EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH TO ENGENDER A MORE INFORMED AND COMPASSIONATE BELIEF SYSTEM AMONG RESIDENTS, UP STRIVES TOWARD OUR ULTIMATE GOAL OF A STABILIZED COMPANION ANIMAL POPULATION AND WITH IT, A SUITABLE HOME FOR EVERY ANIMAL IN TILLAMOOK COUNTY.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3
CLINICUPS ORIGINAL FOCUS WAS SPAY/NEUTER (S/N) AND CONTINUES AS OUR KEY TO SUCCESS. WITH THE MOMENTUM AND HERITAGE OF 1,000 S/NS PER YEAR, UP SEES THE FEASIBILITY OF STABILIZING THE COUNTYS CAT POPULATION. FOCUSED S/N SUCCESS OF 70-90% BY TARGET AREAS (LIKE TOWNS) HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED TO STABILIZE POPULATIONS. THE KEY IS TO FOCUS ON LIMITED GEOGRAPHICAL TARGETS ONE AT A TIME. THIS WILL REQUIRE US TO INCREASE S/NS TO 1,400-2,000/YR FOR 5-6 YEARS UNTIL WE EXPECT THE CAT POPULATION TO STABILIZE REDUCING S/NS TO700/YEAR. OUR TARGET AREAS WILL GRADUALLY MOVE AROUND THE ENTIRE COUNTY. A SIDE BENEFIT WILL BE A GREATLY REDUCED ANNUAL DEATH OF OUTDOOR KITTENS AND CATS. KITTEN DEATHS ARE VERY HIGH IN THE FIRST YEAR. CONTINUOUSLY PREGNANT CATS DIE YOUNG. HIGH IMPACT TARGETED S/N CAN MITIGATE BOTH ITEMS.
MEDICAL SUPPORT: THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL AID ORGANIZATIONS AND REQUESTS FOR HELP LEFT ON OUR HOTLINE, UNITED PAWS HELPS SUBSIDIZE THE MOST NEEDY PET GUARDIANS AND COMMUNITY CAT COLONY CAREGIVERS WITH HIGH QUALITY PET FOOD THEY WOULD OTHERWISE BE UNABLE TO PROVIDE, AND PROVIDE NEEDED MEDICAL SERVICES FOR PETS FROM LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS.
FREE ROAMING COLONY CATS PROGRAM. EACH COLONY WITHIN OUR TARGETED GEOGRAPHICAL SECTORS WILL BE S/NED AND RELATIONSHIPS FORMALIZED WITH A CARETAKER. CARETAKERS WILL ADVISE UP OF NEW CAT ARRIVALS FOR S/N AND ANY NEEDS THAT THEY CANNOT PROVIDE SO THAT MEANS FOR HOMES CAN BE ESTABLISHED.
