WILLAMETTE RIVERKEEPER ENGAGED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE UP AND DOWN THE RIVER IN 2021 CONDUCTING MANY DOZENS OF ESSENTIAL TRASH AND DEBRIS CLEANUPS AS WELL AS VOLUNTEER RESTORATION STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS.

HABITAT RESTORATION ACQUISITION. WILLAMETTE RIVERKEEPER WR CONTINUED ITS WORK AT WILLAMETTE MISSION STATE PARK AND AN OREGON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE NATURAL AREA REMOVING INVASIVE SPECIES, AND PLANTING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF NATIVE PLANTS IN THE FLOODPLAIN. THIS WILL RESULT IN EXCELLENT HABITAT FOR A RANGE OF SPECIES, AND CAN HELP BUILD CLIMATE RESILIENCY. WR ALSO WORKED TO ACQUIRE PROPERTY ALONG THE RIVER, AND STEWARDED TWO PROPERTIES ALREADY IN OWNERSHIP TO IMPROVE HABITAT AND WATER QUALITY. WR ALSO WORKED TO RID THE AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT OF LUDWIDGIA, A VERY INVASIVE AQUATIC WEED THAT IS THREATENING HUNDREDS OF ACRES OF THE WILLAMETTE MAINSTEM AND SIDE CHANNELS.
CLEAN WATER. WR FURTHER WORKED TO IMPLEMENT AND ENFORCE THE FEDERAL CLEAN WATER ACT AT MULTIPLE SITES. WR CONTINUED ITS ACTION TO IMPROVE THE CITY OF ALBANYS WASTEWATER AND STORMWATER SYSTEM, WHICH LED TO A SUCCESSFUL SETTLEMENT IN EARLY 2022. WR ALSO WORKED TO ENFORCE THE CLEAN WATER ACT WITH A SUCCESSFUL SETTLEMENT IN PORTLAND HARBOR AT THE ZENITH ENERGY FACILITY. EACH OF THESE CASES WERE EMBLEMATIC OF HOW CLEAN WATER ACT ENFORCEMENT CAN LEAD TO BOTH CLEAN WATER AND IMPROVED HABITAT.
RIVER DISCOVERY. IN 2021 WR ENABLED SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE TO GET OUT ALONG THE WILLAMETTE RIVER IN CANOES, KAYAKS, STANDUP PADDLE BOARDS, AND VIA RIVERSIDE HIKES. OUR PROGRAM REGULARLY ENGAGED PEOPLE ON A VARIETY OF TRIPS FROM EUGENE TO PORTLAND TO SEE AND EXPERIENCE THE RIVER AND TO LEARN ABOUT ITS ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. WR ALSO CONDUCTED DOZENS OF CLEAN UP EVENTS ALONG THE RIVER TO REMOVE TRASH AND DEBRIS, RESULTING IN HUNDREDS OF YARDS OF TRASH BEING REMOVED FROM RIVERSIDE AREAS. THESE TRIPS ENGAGED OVER 700 PEOPLE IN 2021.
