IDA ENCOURAGES, SUPPORTS, AND HELPS PRESERVE THE LIVABILITY AND HISTORIC NATURE OF THE DOWNTOWN CORE AREA OF INDEPENDENCE FOR ALL RESIDENTS AND VISITORS. THE ORGANIZATION PROMOTES DOWNTOWN RESTORATION AND IMPROVEMENTS THAT PROVIDE BROAD GENERAL PUBLIC BENEFIT.

AS A VITAL PART OF A GROWING COMMUNICATE, IDA RECEIVED GRANT MONEY TO ASSIST SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE COMMUNITY. SMALL BUSINESSES APPLIED FOR ASSISTANCE IN CREATING BUSINESS PLANS, WEBSITES, MARKETING MATERIALS, AND OTHER BUSINESS MANAGMENT HELP.
HANGING BASKETS -- IDA PROVIDES FLOWER BASKETS WHICH TURN INTO BEAUTIFUL BALLS OF COLOR HANGING FROM EVERY LIGHTPOST IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA IN THE SUMMER MONTHS.
HOP & HERITAGE FESTIVAL -- CELEBRATES THE TOWNS HISTORY AS THE HOP CAPITAL OF THE WORLD IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. EACH YEAR, BEGINNING IN JULY, THOUSANDS OF PICKERS DESCENDED ON THE CITY, COMING BY BOAT, WAGON AND TRAIN FOR THE HOP HARVEST. THEY BEDDED DOWN IN TENTS IN THE HOP YARDS, SLEPT ON STRAW, AND COOKED ON SHEET IRON CAMP STOVES. AT THE HEIGHT OF THE HOP ERA, IN THE 1920S AND 1930S, THERE WERE CLOSE TO 4,600 ACRES IN THE SURROUNDING AREA PLANTED FOR HOPS. (INDEPENDENCE CITY WEBSITE)
