TOBACCO - AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION CONTINUES TO BE A LEADER IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE TOBACCO EPIDEMIC, AND WE CONTINUE TO LEAD IN THE FIGHT AGAINST E-CIGARETTE USE. IN ADDITION TO LEADING ADVOCACY EFFORTS FOR COMPREHENSIVE CLEAN INDOOR AIR POLICIES AND FDA OVERSIGHT OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS, THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION HAS DEVELOPED NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED PROGRAMS TO PREVENT YOUTH TOBACCO USE AND TO ASSIST SMOKERS OF ALL AGES IN QUITTING FOR GOOD. ALONG WITH OTHER HEALTH PARTNERS, OUR BOLD GOALS INCLUDE: 1) REDUCE SMOKING RATE, CURRENTLY AT ABOUT 15%, TO LESS THAN 10% WITHIN 10 YEARS, 2) PROTECT ALL AMERICANS FROM SECONDHAND SMOKE WITHIN FIVE YEARS, AND 3) ULTIMATELY ELIMINATE THE DEATH AND DISEASE CAUSE BY TOBACCO USE. IN THE UPCOMING YEAR, WE WILL SUPPORT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SMOKEFREE HOUSING AND COLLEGE CAMPUSES, TOBACCO CESSATION PROGRAMS TARGETING DISPARATE POPULATIONS AND YOUTH LED TOBACCO PREVENTION PROGRAMS.
LUNG DISEASE - THE LUNG ASSOCIATION CONTINUES TO BE THE LEADING ORGANIZATION WORKING TO SAVE LIVES BY IMPROVING LUNG HEALTH AND PREVENTING LUNG DISEASE. WE HAVE LED THE FIGHT FOR HEALTHY LUNGS AND CLEAN AIR FOR OVER 100 YEARS. OUR EFFORTS PROVIDE SUPPORT TO INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH LUNG DISEASE AND THEIR CAREGIVERS, FROM ASTHMA MANAGEMENT CLASSES IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, SUPPORT AND EDUCATIONAL GROUPS FOR SENIORS WITH LUNG DISEASE. WE ALSO HOST EDUCATIONAL EVENTS IN THE COMMUNITY RAISING AWARENESS OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES LIKE INFLUENZA OR TUBERCULOSIS AND URGENT PUBLIC HEALTH TOPICS LIKE CLIMATE CHANGE OR HEALTHCARE ACCESS. NOW IN ITS FOURTH YEAR, THE LUNG FORCE MOVEMENT IS UNITING FAMILIES AGAINST LUNG CANCER AND RAISING AWARENESS THAT ANYONE CAN GET LUNG CANCER, THE LEADING CANCER KILLER IN THE UNITED STATES. IN THE UPCOMING YEAR, LUNG FORCE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES WILL PROVIDE EDUCATION AND SUPPORT TO LUNG CANCER SURVIVORS, LOVED ONES AND HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS.
RESEARCH - RESEARCH HAS BEEN INTEGRAL TO THE LUNG ASSOCIATION'S FIGHT AGAINST LUNG DISEASE FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY. FUNDS RAISED GO DIRECTLY TOWARD THE PREVENTION, DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT AND CURE FOR ASTHMA, COPD, LUNG CANCER, PULMONARY FIBROSIS, INFECTIOUS LUNG DISEASES AND RARE LUNG DISORDERS. RESEARCH DOLLARS ADDITIONALLY FUND PREVENTION OF LUNG DISEASE, INCLUDING ADDRESSING IMPORTANT RISK FACTORS SUCH AS TOBACCO SMOKE AND OTHER AIR POLLUTANTS. ADDITIONALLY, THE LUNG ASSOCIATION FUNDS THE AIRWAYS CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTERS, THE NATION'S LARGEST NOT-FOR-PROFIT NETWORK OF CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTERS EXPRESSLY FOCUSED ON IMPROVING ASTHMA AND COPD CARE. FINALLY, IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS, INCLUDING OUR LUNG FORCE INVESTMENTS, WE HAVE FUNDED $6.7 MILLION IN LUNG CANCER RESEARCH GRANTS.
EDUCATION & TRAINING - ALAMP PROVIDES CLASSES, COURSES, AND PROGRAMS ON LUNG HEALTH TOPICS INCLUDING ASTHMA, LUNG DISEASE, AND QUITTING SMOKING. LUNG FORCE EXPOS ARE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PATIENTS AND HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE LATEST TRENDS, RESOURCES AND RESEARCH SURROUNDING LUNG CANCER, COPD, ASTHMA AND OTHER LUNG DISEASES.
