DJJ ADVANCES RACIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE BY DEVELOPING METRO DETROIT JEWS AS COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS WHO FIGHT FOR TRANSFORMATIVE POLICY CHANGE IN DEEP PARTNERSHIP WITH NEIGHBORS

IN 2023 WE MOBILIZED OVER 50 LEADERS TO ADVOCATE FOR STATEWIDE WATER AFFORDABILITY, DRIVERS LICENSES FOR ALL, RENTERS BILL OF RIGHTS, FAIR CHANCE HOUSING FOR FORMERLY INCARCERATED MICHIGANDERS, LGBTQ RIGHTS, AND CLEAN ENERGY. WE STEWARDED ANTI-RACISM LEARNING INTERNALLY AS WELL AS FOR THE BROADER PUBLIC. OVER 120 PEOPLE ATTENDED OUR PURIM CELEBRATION WHICH UPLIFTED LGBTQ RIGHTS IN MICHIGAN. WE RECRUITED 26 MICHIGAN RABBIS TO SIGN ONTO A LETTER IN SUPPORT OF DRIVERS LICENSE FOR ALL. 2023 WAS ALSO OUR FIRST YEAR AS AN INDEPENDENT EMPLOYER AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION AFTER MATURING OUT OF OUR FISCAL SPONSORSHIP. SOME OF THE FOCUSES OF OUR ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORK WERE SUPPORTING THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR INAUGURAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SUPPORTING OUR BOARD AND STAFF WITH TRAINING AND RESOURCES, AND DEVELOPING DJJS THEORY OF CHANGE WITH THE INVOLVEMENT OF 30 VOLUNTEER LEADERS.
