Part 3 - Line 4a
THE KNIGHT FOUNDATION FUNDED A GRANT TO CREATE MULTIPLE PARKLETS THROUGHOUT DOWNTOWN COLUMBIA. ISSUED BY CENTRAL CAROLINA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF COLUMBIA, ONE COLUMBIA OVERSAW THE DESIGN AND INSTALLATION PROCESS FOR THE PUBLIC SPACES. ARTIST SUCH AS CAIT MALONEY CONTRIBUTED DESIGNS.
VISTA GUILD PUBLIC ART: THE CONGAREE VISTA GUILD OVERSEES A PROMINENT AND ACTIVE DISTRICT WITHIN THE CITY OF COLUMBIA, THE VISTA. THE AREA IS A LOCAL FAVORITE AND HIGH TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR ITS MIX OF RESTAURANT, RETAIL, AND HOSPITALITY BUSINESS SECTORS, INCLUDING LOCAL SMALL AND CHAIN BUSINESSES. IT IS PLACED BETWEEN THE MAIN DISTRICT (BUSINESS SECTOR) AND THE CONGAREE RIVER. DUE TO ONE COLUMBIA'S PARTNERSHIPS AND EFFORTS WITH ESTABLISHED AND DEVELOPING SPACES, WE HAVE AIDED THE CONGAREE VISTA GUILD IN ENHANCING THE COMMUNITY WITH MULTIPLE PUBLIC ART PROJECTS. AN ADDITIONAL PUBLIC ART PIECE, THE MOTHERHOOD SCULPTURE, WAS ADDED IN 2022. UNVEILED AS A KICK-OFF TO THE VARIED OFFERINGS OF A WEEK-LONG ARTISTA VISTA (ART FESTIVAL,) ARTIST NORA VALDEZ WAS PRESENT TO SPEAK ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HER SCULPTURE. SHE CREATED IT OF INDIANA LIMESTONE TO REPRESENT THE STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE OF THE MOTHER, THE WORKER, AND THE IMMIGRANT. THE FEET ARE LARGER IN SCALE TO REMIND US ALL TO REMEMBER OUR ROOTS. THE SCULPTURE CAN BE FOUND AT THE CORNER OF LADY AND GADSDEN STREETS. TO ACCOMPANY THE VAST VISUAL ART OF THE AREA, LOCAL ARTIST-PERFORMER DJ PREACH (PREACH JACOBS) WAS HIRED TO PROVIDE VOICEOVER WORK FOR A PUBLICALLY-ACCESSIBLE SELF-GUIDED VISTA PUBLIC ART TOUR.
IN COLLABORATION WITH THE SC ARTS COMMISSION (SCAC,) ONE COLUMBIA ADMINISTERED TWO STATEWIDE PROGRAMS - THE ARTIST ENTREPRENEUR INCUBATOR (AEI) AND POETRY OUT LOUD (POL). WE PARTNERED TO OFFER A NEW VIRTUAL SERIES INITIATIVE, THE AEI, FOCUSING ON STRENGTHENING ARTS BUSINESSES ACROSS THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA. THIS SERIES WAS ESTABLISHED FOR ARTISTS WHO WANT TO MONETIZE THEIR CRAFT. THE ONCE-MONTHLY SERIES WAS OFFERED IN SEVEN PARTS, A FOUNDATIONAL COURSE SIMILAR TO BUSINESS 101 AND FIVE GENRE-SPECIFIC COURSES (MUSIC, PUBLIC ART, MULTIMEDIA, VISUAL ART AND CRAFTS, AND LITERATURE.) THE LAST COURSE FOCUSED ON ART SPACES AND SPACES FOR ARTISTS. POL IS A NATIONAL ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT ENCOURAGES THE STUDY OF POETRY BY OFFERING EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AND A RECITATION COMPETITION TO HIGH SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THE COMPETITION ADVANCES FROM CLASS TO SCHOOL-LEVEL TO STATE; THEN TO NATIONALS IN DC. STATE AGENCIES ACROSS THE NATION HOST THE PROGRAM AND ONE COLUMBIA IS SCAC'S STATE PARTNER IN FACILITATION OF THE SC PROGRAM. THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS (NEA) AND THE POETRY FOUNDATION CREATED POETRY OUT LOUD, AND THE NEA PROVIDES GRANT FUNDS ANNUALLY FOR EACH AGENCY AND AGENCY PARTNER FOR EXPENSES AND PRIZES FOR STUDENTS THAT ADVANCE THROUGH THE COMPETITION. SC STUDENTS, GRADES 9-12, WERE INVITED TO SUBMIT VIDEOS TO BE JUDGED IN TWIN REGIONAL COMPETITIONS. THOSE REGIONALS YIELDED FOUR FINALISTS EACH TO COMPETE IN THE VIRTUAL STATE FINALS. THIS YEAR, THE EIGHT FINALISTS CAME FROM FOUR SCHOOLS IN CHARLESTON, GREENVILLE, AND SPARTANBURG. EMILY ALLISON OF THE FINE ARTS CENTER OF GREENVILLE WAS THE 2022 SC STATE CHAMPION.
