THE MISSION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HUMANITIES COUNCIL, INC. IS TO ENRICH THE CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL LIVES OF SOUTH CAROLINIANS. THE ORGANIZATION SEEKS TO INCREASE PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF AND SUPPORT FOR THE HUMANITIES BY TELLING THE HUMAN STORY BY AWARDING GRANTS FOR HIGH-QUALITY PUBLIC PROGRAMS, BY GENERATING SPECIAL HUMANITIES INITIATIVES, AND BY BRINGING HUMANITIES PERSPECTIVES TO BEAR ON CONTEMPORARY ISSUES.

DURING FY2023, SC HUMANITIES INCREASED PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE HUMANITIES BY FUNDING, PROMOTING, AND COORDINATING VARIOUS EXHIBITS, DOCUMENTARIES, DISCUSSION FORUMS, RESEARCH, PLANNING, WORKSHOPS, DRAMATIZATIONS, LECTURES, AND EVENTS THAT PERTAIN TO THE HUMANITIES. SPECIFICALLY, 69 GRANTS TOTALING 344,679 WERE AWARDED TO ORGANIZATIONS IN 21 COUNTIES. THROUGH THE SPEAKERS BUREAU PROGRAM, 27 OF THE STATE'S FINEST SCHOLARS GAVE 82 PRESENTATIONS TO NONPROFITS AND PUBLIC AGENCIES AROUND SOUTH CAROLINA, SHARING THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND INTEREST IN THE HUMANITIES. IN ADDITION, SC HUMANITIES CELEBRATED OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY WITH SEVERAL INITIATIVES. SC HUMANITIES PUBLISHED A 50-YEAR HISTORY OF THE COUNCIL, WRITTEN BY DR. RANDY AKERS, TITLED "GOLDEN: THE FIRST 50 YEARS OF SOUTH CAROLINA HUMANITIES." WE ALSO HOSTED A WELL-ATTENDED PARTY IN MARCH 2023 FEATURING NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES CHAIR SHELLY LOWE AND PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING JOURNALIST KATHLEEN PARKER. OUR COMMEMORATION ALSO STRETCHED INTO OUR PROGRAMMING WITH OUR THEMED REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS ON "SCH@50: REMEMBERING THE PAST, REIMAGINING THE FUTURE," WHICH YIELDED 8 APPLICATIONS, AND THE TRAVELING EXHIBITION "RESILIENCE AND REVOLUTION: NATIVE PEOPLES IN 18TH CENTURY SOUTH CAROLINA," CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SC STATE MUSEUM, SC DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES AND HISTORY, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA LANCASTER. TOGETHER, THESE ACTIVITIES HIGHLIGHTED THE WORK OF SC HUMANITIES IN THE STATE AND BROUGHT PEOPLE TOGETHER IN CONVERSATION AND CELEBRATION.
