Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

AMAZING AVEN'S QUEST FOR AMOEBA AWARENESS IS A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION WITH A MISSION OF IMPROVING AND ADVANCING EARLY DETECTION STRATEGIES AND MEDICAL TREATMENTS FOR INFECTIONS CAUSED BY NAEGLERIA FOWLERI AND PRIMARY AMEBIC MENINGOENCEPHALITIS (PAM) WHILE INCREASING AWARENESS WITHIN MEDICAL COMMUNITIES AND THE PUBLIC.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

WE ESTABLISHED A FUND THROUGH UNC IN THE FOUNDATIONS NAME WITH THE FUNDS BEING USED TO IMPROVE TRAINING AND SPREAD AWARENESS AMONG THEIR STAFF SO THAT THEY ARE BETTER PREPARED TO DETECT CASES OF NF.

IN ORDER TO FULFILL OUR MISSION OF FUNDING RESEARCH TO IMPROVE THE DETECTION AND TREATMENT OF NF WE AWARDED A GRANT TO THE MOSSMAN LAB AT DUKE UNIVERSITY. THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF THEIR REASEARCH IS TO DEVELOP AN ASSAY THAT CAN TEST CSF FOR THE PRESENCE OF NF WHICH WOULD ALLOW FOR EASIER AND FASTER DETECTION OF NF INFECTIONS. CURRENTLY THE ONLY METHOD OF DETECTION IS FOR LAB TECHNICIANS TO PHYSICALLY SEE NAEGLERIA FOWLERI IN THE CSF SAMPLE.

TO SUPPORT OUR MISSION OF BRINGING AWARENESS OF NF TO OTHERS WE MAINTAINED OUR WEBSITE, PARTICIPATED IN SEVERAL PR AND COMMUNITY EVENTS, AND PROMOTED AWARENESS THROUGH OUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS. SOME OF THE EVENTS WE ATTENDED INCLUDE A MUDCATS BASEBALL GAME (A SEMI-PRO TEAM IN THE AREA), EVENTS AT LOCAL SCHOOLS WHERE WE PROVIDED MARKETING MATERIALS REGARDING WATER SAFETY AND WAYS TO PREVENT NF, AND A HOLIDAY EVENT WITH A LOCAL INSURANCE COMPANY WHERE WE GOT TO SHARE AVEN'S STORY. IN ADDITION WE DESIGNED MARKETING MATERIALS INCLUDING BANNERS, SHIRTS, HATS, ARM BANDS, AND PRINT MATERIALS FOR THESE EVENTS TO INCREASE COMMUNITY AWARENESS.
