THE LINE 3 LEGAL DEFENSE FUND PROVIDES FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO PEOPLE FACING ARREST, JAIL TIME, AND STATE REPRESSION BECAUSE OF THEIR OPPOSITION TO ENBRIDGE'S LINE 3 PIPELINE PROJECT. WE ARE A VOLUNTEER-RUN NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION BASED OUT OF THE TWIN CITIES, AND WERE FOUNDED IN 2019 AND WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE FOR AS LONG AS IS NEEDED. WE ARE FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTABLE TO THE NEEDS OF DEFENDANTS, AND RESPOND TO REQUESTS ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS. WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR THE RISKS THAT WATER PROTECTORS HAVE TAKEN, AND SO EXCITED TO SUPPORT THEM

THE LINE 3 LEGAL DEFENSE FUND HAS EXISTED SINCE 2019, INITIALLY AS A SINGLE-MEMBER LLC AND NOW WE HAVE APPLIED AS AND ARE OPERATING AS A C(4). WE SENT IN OUR INTENT TO OPERATE AS A C(4) TO THE IRS IN 2021 AND OUR FINAL APPLICATION IS STILL PENDING. OVER THE COURSE OF 2022, WE CONTINUED OUR WORK OF SUPPORTING LINE 3 DEFENDANTS THROUGH THEIR COURT CASES. WE RECEIVE REQUESTS FROM DEFENDANTS, REVIEW THEM, AND THEN DISBURSE THE NEEDED FUNDS. WE CURRENTLY ONLY FULFILL REQUESTS TO COVER LEGAL FEES AND TRANSPORTATION COSTS. OUR ACTIVITY IS CONDUCTED MAINLY ONLINE, ALTHOUGH WE ARE BASED IN MINNESOTA. WE ARE COMPLETELY FUNDED BY DONATIONS FROM INDIVIDUALS. WE ARE A VOLUNTEER-RUN NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, MADE UP OF VOLUNTEER BOARD MEMBERS. LESS THAN 1% OF OUR SPENDING IS ALLOCATED TO OVERHEAD COSTS AND ADMINISTRATIVE FEES, AND THE REST IS SPENT ON SUPPORTING DEFENDANTS. THIS ACTIVITY FURTHERS OUR EXEMPT PURPOSE AS WE DONATE OUR TIME AND EFFORT TO SUPPORTING PEOPLE WHO NEED MONEY TO SUPPORT THEIR RIGHT TO FREE EXPRESSION. OUR PLAN IS TO CONTINUE THE SAME OPERATIONS AS STATED ABOVE FOR AS LONG AS IS NEEDED.
