Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
AT WASTE NOT, WE'RE CREATING SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS THAT HELP PEOPLE AND THE PLANET FLOURISH. WE DO THIS BY ELIMINATING FOOD WASTE AND HUNGER THROUGH INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS. A GREAT DEAL OF TIME, MONEY, AND RESOURCES GO INTO GROWING AND TRANSPORTING NUTRITIOUS FOOD. YET, EACH YEAR, 40% OF THAT FOOD IS THROWN AWAY. AT THE SAME TIME, NEARLY 1 MILLION PEOPLE IN ARIZONA ARE STRUGGLING WITH FOOD INSECURITY. WE'RE TRANSFORMING THIS BROKEN SYSTEM BY CONNECTING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ARIZONANS WITH QUALITY FOOD THAT WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE GONE TO WASTE. BY REIMAGINING WHAT'S POSSIBLE FOR FOOD RESCUE, WE'RE MAKING OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR PLANET HEALTHIER.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
WITH FOOD RESCUE AS OUR SOLE MISSION, WASTE NOT PARTNERS WITH MORE THAN 100 GENEROUS FOOD BUSINESSES IN OUR COMMUNITY, INCLUDING GROCERS, CATERERS, RESTAURANTS, RESORTS, AND EVENT VENUES. THESE FOOD DONORS SHARE OUR VALUES AND DONATE THEIR EXCESS FOOD, PREVENTING IT FROM GOING TO WASTE. USING OUR EFFICIENT, SAME-DAY DELIVERY OPERATION, OUR TEAM OF PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS COLLECTS AND TRANSPORTS AN AVERAGE OF 14,000 POUNDS OF FOOD PER DAY, FIVE DAYS PER WEEK. THIS FOOD IS DELIVERED TO NEARLY 80 NONPROFIT AGENCIES WHO ARE SERVING THOSE IN NEED THROUGHOUT THE METRO PHOENIX AREA. FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING ON 6/30/21, WASTE NOT DIVERTED 3.5 MILLION POUNDS OF PREPARED AND PERISHABLE FOOD FROM LANDFILLS AND INSTEAD, DELIVERED TO NONPROFIT AGENCIES FEEDING CHILDREN, ADULTS, AND SENIORS EXPERIENCING FOOD INSECURITY.
IN JUNE 2019, WASTE NOT EXPANDED THEIR REACH AND IMPACT WHEN THEY DEPLOYED A NEW FOOD RESCUE APP DESIGNED FOR SMALLER-VOLUME FOOD DONATIONS. THIS APP ALLOWS FOOD BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES, FROM LOCAL RESTAURANTS TO LARGE RETAILERS, TO QUICKLY AND EASILY POST AND DONATE SURPLUS FOOD OUTSIDE OF SCHEDULED DELIVERY ROUTES. ONCE POSTED, THE APP SENDS A MESSAGE VIA TEXT TO OUR NETWORK OF VOLUNTEER DRIVERS WHO CAN QUICKLY PICK UP FOOD DONATIONS IN THEIR PERSONAL VEHICLES, MONITOR FOR FOOD SAFETY MEASURES, AND DELIVER IT TO ONE OF WASTE NOT'S BEST-SUITED AGENCY PARTNERS.
