Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

EHRP SUPPORTS INDEPENDENT JOURNALISTS TO CREATE HIGH QUALITY STORIES ABOUT ECONOMIC INEQUITY. WE THEN PLACE THOSE STORIES IN MAINSTREAM MEDIA, MOBILIZING READERS TO FIGHT SYSTEMS PERPETUATING ECONOMIC INJUSTICE.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

THE ECONOMIC HARDSHIP REPORTING PROJECT (EHRP) IS A BEACON, AN OUTLET, AND A SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR INDEPENDENT JOURNALISTS WHO HAVE BEEN LAID OFF OR PAINFULLY UNDERPAID. OUR COMPELLING STORIES ILLUSTRATE THE SYSTEMS OF POWER THAT LEAD TO ECONOMIC INEQUALITY, CHANGING THE NARRATIVE THAT THOSE AT THE BOTTOM ARE TO BLAME FOR THEIR OWN STRUGGLES. WHILE LAYOFFS AND DOWNSIZING ARE HITTING LOWER-INCOME JOURNALISTS AND JOURNALISTS OF COLOR, EHRPS GRASSROOTS APPROACH ENSURES THAT MARGINALIZED VOICES ARE INCLUDED IN MAINSTREAM MEDIA OUTLETS.IN 2023, EHRP CO-PUBLISHED MORE THAN 150 PIECES APPEARING IN OUTLETS FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES TO TEEN VOGUE TO FAST COMPANY. THESE STORIES WERE RE-PRINTED OR SYNDICATED MORE THAN 200 TIMES, REACHING MILLIONS OF READERS, AND COVERED A WIDE RANGE OF MEDIA, INCLUDING PRINT, TELEVISION, RADIO, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND DOCUMENTARY FILMS.OCTOBER 2023 SAW THE PUBLICATION OF OUR ANTHOLOGY: GOING FOR BROKE, A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS ABOUT LIVING IN ECONOMIC PRECARITY IN AMERICA THAT ARE AT TURNS COMPELLING, UNEXPECTED, FUNNY, HUMAN, AND SURPRISING. WE ALSO PRODUCED THE SECOND SEASON OF ITS ACCOMPANYING PODCAST, HOSTED BY LONG-TIME EHRP CONTRIBUTOR RAY SUAREZ. REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES OF OUR WORK INCLUDE WILL THE U.A.W. TURN THE RUST BELT GREEN (THE NEW YORKER), PRISON PHONE FEES DRIVE POOR FAMILIES INTO DEBT. ARE THEY FINALLY COMING TO AN END? (MOTHER JONES), HOW AIR POLLUTION AND THE HOUSING CRISIS ARE CONNECTED (GRIST MAGAZINE), AND THE COLLAPSE OF THIS TEXAS HEALTH CARE PROGRAM IS PUTTING WOMENS LIVES IN DANGER (THE NATION).
