Part 3 - Line 1

THE BOMAZEEN LAND TRUST ENABLES DIRECT DESCENDANTS OF THE ABENAKI/WABANAKI PEOPLE TO RENEW AND RESUME THEIR CARETAKING AND STEWARDSHIP ROLES FOR LANDS AND WATERS WITH HISTORICAL, SPIRITUAL AND ECOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE TO THE ABENAKI/WABANAKI PEOPLE.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

FOOD SOVEREIGNTY: WE GREW ANCESTRAL VARIETIES OF CORN, BEANS, SQUASH, AND POTATOES IN 2021 THAT WERE PASSED OUT TO WABANAKI COMMUNITY MEMBERS OVER THE SUMMER AND HARVEST SEASON. WE GREW TRADITIONAL MEDICINES AS WELL AND FORMED RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER FOOD/FARM GROUPS AND NONPROFITS SERVING THE WABANAKI COMMUNITY. WE ALSO PURCHASED BULK ORDERS OF ABENAKI-MADE "WATSO SAGAMITE," AN ANCESTRAL SOUP THAT HAS BEEN MADE IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, AND DELIVERED PACKAGES OF IT TO MEMBERS OF ALL WABANAKI COMMUNITIES. FINALLY, WE RECEIVED FOOD DONATIONS OF GARLIC, VARIOUS TEAS AND TRADITIONAL HERBS THAT WE DELIVERED TO THE VARIOUS RESERVATION COMMUNITIES. WE BROUGHT A DOZEN TRIBAL MEMBERS TO THE PLANTING GROUNDS AND ENGAGED THEM IN THE EDUCATION, PLANTING, MAINTENANCE AND HARVESTING PROCESSES, AS WELL AS THE DELIVERY PROCESS.

LAND STEWARDSHIP: WE SUCCESSFULLY ACQUIRED 57 ACRES OF LAND IN 2021 (68 SAWYERS MILLS RD PROPERTY IN STARKS, ME), WHICH WAS A DONATION FROM THE PRESBYTERIANS OF NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND. THE LAND CONTAINS FACILITIES AND NATURAL RESOURCES THAT WILL ENHANCE AND SERVE OUR OTHER PROGRAMS AND WILL BE AN IDEAL PLACE TO CENTER THE ORGANIZATION'S ACTIVITIES. THIS DONATION WAS FINALIZED IN NOVEMBER OF 2021. WE STARTED SEVERAL OTHER IMPORTAND RELATIONSHIPS WITH LANDHOLDERS AND TRIBES IN 2021 AND IDENTIFIED SITES OF INTEREST TO PURSUE IN COMING YEARS.

CULTURAL TRANSMISSION: IN 2021, WE DELIVERED TRADITIONAL CRAFTING MATERIALS TO MEMBERS OF THE WABANAKI COMMUNITIES, INCLUDING DEER AND ELK HIDES, BEADS, FURS, AWLS, FABRIC AND OTHER MATERIALS. WE ORGANIZED SEVERAL CEREMONIES, INCLUDING THE FIRST GREEN CORN CEREMONY TO BE PRACTICED IN SEVERAL GENERATIONS. HERE, ANCIENT STORIES, SONGS, AND DANCES WERE TAUGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN GENERATIONS. AT THIS CEREMONY WE WERE ALSO ABLE TO EAT THE CROPS THAT BOMAZEEN LAND TRUST HAD GROWN IN THE FOOD SOVEREIGNTY PROGRAM. WE ALSO ORGANIZED ANOTHER CEREMONY, THE "NORRIDGEWOCK CEREMONY" COMMEMORATING SURVIVORS OF THE MASSACRE OF 1724.
