TO BUILD CHARACTER, COMMUNITY AND CAREERS BY CULTIVATING RELEVANT AND TRANSFERABLE INTERPERSONAL SKILLS, APPLYING CLASSROOM LESSONS TO REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCES, AND CREATING PATHWAYS TO EQUITABLE EMPLOYMENT AND THRIVING CAREERS FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS

CARVER HOUSE, REQUITYS SIGNATURE PROJECT, IS FOCUSED ON RENOVATING A VACANT ROWHOUSE WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INTO AN AFFORDABLE NET-ZERO HOME. PARTNERING WITH NEIGHBORING CARVER VO-TECH HIGH SCHOOL, CARVER HOUSE ALIGNS PROJECT-BASED LEARNING WITH THE VOCATION CURRICULUM. BY APPLYING CLASSROOM LESSONS TO AUTHENTIC WORK, STUDENTS IN CARPENTRY, ELECTRICAL, MASONRY, INTERACTIVE MEDIA, BUSINESS, AND HVAC ARE TRAINED, EQUIPPED, AND EXPERIENCED FOR CONSTRUCTION JOBS AND CAREER PATHWAYS. OUR GOAL IS TO PRODUCE A SKILLED AND EMPLOYABLE CONSTRUCTION WORKFORCE TO SATISFY THE LABOR NEED IN BALTIMORE. THIS WORK IS ESSENTIAL BECAUSE DESPITE LEARNING CONSTRUCTION TRADES AND GRADUATING, BALTIMORE CITY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS EARN FAR BELOW NATIONAL AVERAGES.


REQUITY WAS AWARDED TWO BEAUTIFICATION GRANTS FROM THE UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL MARYLAND TO PROVIDE A VIBRANT NEIGHBORHOOD SPACE FOR THE RESIDENTS LIVING ON 2200 PRESSTMAN AND THE STUDENTS ATTENDING CARVER VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL. THROUGH LANDSCAPING AND THE INSTALLATION OF SOLAR POWERED LIGHTING, REQUITY IS COLLABORATING WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY TO HELP IMPROVE SAFETY. THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF PRESSTMAN STREET CAN BE IMPROVED THROUGH AN ADDED TREE CANOPY, WHICH WILL HELP REGULATE HEATING AND COOLING. THE STREET OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR COMMUNITY DRIVEN BEAUTIFICATION AND CLEAN UP, WHILE PROVIDING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CARVER STUDENTS TO RECEIVE VOCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. REQUITY AIMS TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY WITH SUPPLIES, INSTALLATION, AND COMMUNITY MEETINGS TO KEEP RESIDENTS INFORMED AND BUILD ONGOING, SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIPS. PLEASANT PRESSTMAN IS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT TO GIVE THE RESIDENTS OWNERSHIP OF THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD AND HAVE A VOICE IN ITS DEVELOPMENT. THIS PARTNERSHIP PROVIDES FOR ORGANIC COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, PROVIDING RESIDENTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR NETWORKING AND WORK OPPORTUNITIES.
