AN INDEPENDENT ORGANIZATION THAT ADVANCES PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE RISKS THAT RURAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS ENCOUNTER ONLINE AND PROVIDE SERVICE AND EDUCATION TO AFFECTED COMMUNITIES. SEE SCH O FOR A MORE DETAILED DESCRIPTION.

LOCAL JOURNALISM COHORT/CONVENING:WE EXPANDED OUR NATIONWIDE LOCAL REPORTERS COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE AND DELIVERED A NEW CURRICULUM FOR A SERIES OF VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON TRAININGS THAT INCLUDED TRAUMA-INFOMRED COMMUNITY ENGAGED REPORTING, DIGITAL SECURITY AND SAFETY FOR LOCAL JOURNALISTS, HEFAT TRAINING, ELECTIONS REPORTING AND OTHER RESOURCES AND WORKSHOPS FOR A RANGE OF TOPICAL LOCAL AND REGIONAL REPORTING. WE HOSTED A CONVENING AND SCREENING EVENT FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS IN PITTSBURGH, PA IN SEPTEMBER 2023 .


RESEARCH:WE CONTINUED FOCUS GROUPS WITH HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE-AGE STUDENTS ON THEIR DIGITAL EXPERIENCES, DIGITAL CULTURE, AND EXPOSURE TO ONLINE HARMS AND OTHER MULTI-PLATFORM DIGITAL ETHNOGRAPHY WITH RURAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS. WE BEGAN A RURAL YOUTH VOTERS PROGRAM AND RESEARCHED AND DEVELOPED CURRICULUM, SURVEYS, ORAL HISTORY MODULES AND OTHER PROGRAMMING FOR THE PROGRAM. WE BEGAN RESEARCH USING MORAL INJURY FRAMEWORK TO ADDRESS YOUNG PEOPLES EXPOSURE TO ONLINE HARMS AND SUSCEPTIBILITY TO ONLINE MANIPULATION. WE CONTINUED WORK WITH A NATIONAL RURAL YOUTH WORKING GROUP - GROWING RURAL VOTERS- SHARING RESOURCES, RESEARCH AND COLLABORATING ON NEW RESEARCH FOR ADDRESSING CHALLENGES FACING RURAL YOUTH. (CONT. DOCUMENTARY-WE EXPANDED COMMUNITY-BASED SCREENINGS THAT INCLUDES SCREENING EVENTS IN ATLANTA, MINNEAPOLIS, IDAHO, AND SITES IN APPALACHIA FOR AUDIENCES RANGING FROM FAITH-BASED AUDIENCES TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS, COLLEGE STUDENTS AND RURAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS. WE CONTINUED IMPACT PRODUCTION FOR TARGETED AUDIENCES FOR 2024 WITH A FOCUS ON INTEGRATING RESEARCH INTO AN IMPACT STRATEGY FOR THE FILE. THIS INCLUDES SOCIAL AND CULTURAL IMPACT RESEARCH EMERGING FROM DOCUMENTARY FILM SPACES THAT RECOGNIZE THE POWER OF THIS MEDIUM IN FOSTERING EMPATHY AND CONNECTION WITH THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF OTHERS AND THAT APPLIES A MORAL INJURY FRAMEWORK TO THE WORK.
