THE GOAL OF THE KENTUCKY U.S. COLORED TROOPS PROJECT IS TO LEARN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE ENSLAVED MEN FROM KENTUCKY WHO JOINED THE UNION ARMY DURING THE CIVIL WAR. THE PROJECT USES MILITARY RECORDS INCLUDING PENSION FILES WHICH MENTION THE NAMES OF THE SOLDIER'S ENSLAVERS TO FIND ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS WHICH HELP IDENTIFY MEMBERS OF THE SOLDIER'S FAMILY ALLOWING US TO CREATE FAMILY TREES WHICH CONNECT PRESENT DAY AFRICAN AMERICANS TO THEIR ENSLAVED ANCESTORS.
