EDUCATION: NPPA OFFERS A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS TO ENHANCE THE PROFESSIONAL AND BUSINESS SKILLS OF VISUAL JOURNALISTS. INCLUDED IN THE EVENTS IS THE NORTHERN SHORT COURSE, A 3-DAY CONFERENCE WITH DOZENS OF LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS TAUGHT BY INDUSTRY LEADERS ON TOPICS RELEVANT TO PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS IN THE FIELD, AND PORTFOLIO REVIEWS CONDUCTED BY TOP PHOTO EDITORS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS. IN ADDITION, NPPA HOSTS THREE INTENSE, WEEK-LONG TRAINING WORKSHOPS IN THE AREAS OF VIDEO NEWS STORIES, ADVANCED STORYTELLING AND MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS. THESE HIGHLY-REGARDED PROGRAMS ARE A MIXTURE OF PRESENTATIONS BY AWARD-WINNING VISUAL JOURNALISTS; HANDS-ON COACHING AND CANDID CRITIQUES; AND IN-THE-FIELD ASSIGNMENTS. FINALLY, NPPA ALSO PERIODICALLY CONDUCTS BUSINESS PRACTICES PROGRAMS, ONE-DAY EVENTS THAT HELP PHOTOJOURNALISTS CREATE SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODELS IN A CHANGING MARKETPLACE. LECTURES ADDRESS BASIC BUSINESS PRINCIPLES FACED BY FREELANCE JOURNALISTS.


MAGAZINE PUBLICATION NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER MAGAZINE IS NPPA'S HALLMARK PUBLICATION, PUBLISHED CONTINUOUSLY SINCE NPPA'S FOUNDING IN 1946. AS THE PROFESSIONAL VOICE OF VISUAL JOURNALISM, NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER IDENTIFIES TRENDS, DELINEATES ISSUES, AND PROVIDES INFORMATION TO PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS ALIKE. THE MAGAZINE'S COLUMNS AND NEWS STORIES ARE OFTEN CITED AS "THE AUTHORITY" ON TOPICS RANGING FROM LAW AND ETHICS TO TECHNOLOGY AND THE ART OF PHOTOJOURNALISM. THE PUBLICATION IS DISTRIBUTED WORLDWIDE SIX TIMES EACH YEAR TO APPROXIMATELY 4,500 INDIVIDUALS.


MEMBER SERVICES: NPPA CONSISTENTLY DELIVERS VALUE TO ITS 6,000-PLUS MEMBERS AND TO THE BROADER PROFESSION BY SERVING AS THE LEADING ADVOCATE FOR THE RIGHTS OF VISUAL JOURNALISTS BY ADDRESSING LOCAL AND FEDERAL POLICY ISSUES THAT AFFECT JOURNALISTS' ABILITY TO PROVIDE THE PUBLIC WITH NEWS IMAGES. NPPA ALSO FOSTERS THE HIGHEST STANDARDS IN VISUAL JOURNALISM BY PROMOTING ITS LONG-STANDING CODE OF ETHICS. IN ADDITION, THE ASSOCIATION ASSISTS ITS MEMBERS IN ADVANCING THEIR CAREERS BY MANAGING THE VISUAL JOURNALISM JOB BANK THAT LISTS POSITION OPENINGS AT LEADING MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS. FURTHER, NPPA'S BEST OF PHOTOJOURNALISM COMPETITION - RENOWNED AS "THE CONTESTS DESIGNED FOR PHOTOJOURNALISTS BY PHOTOJOURNALISTS, AND INCORPORATING THE MANY FACETS OF THE VISUAL JOURNALISM INDUSTRY - ANNUALLY ATTRACTS THE MOST TALENTED PROFESSIONALS IN STILL, VIDEO, MULTIMEDIA, AND EDITING. OTHER MONTHLY AND QUARTERLY CONTESTS COMPLEMENT THE BOP COMPETITION AND SHOWCASE OUTSTANDING WORK BY NPPA MEMBERS.
