THE BECHTLER MUSEUM OF MODERN ART OFFERS AN ARRAY OF INNOVATIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE TO ENRICH THEIR CULTURAL EXPERIENCES, SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT AND PERSONAL SELF-DISCOVERY. DURING THE 2020-21 FISCAL YEAR, THE MUSEUM OFFERED THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: MODERNISM + FILM (INVESTIGATED THEMES IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART AND ARCHITECTURE THROUGH THE LENS OF FILM), JAZZ AT THE BECHTLER (OFFERED NEW PERSPECTIVES ON MODERN JAZZ COMPOSERS, LEGENDARY ARTISTS, AND MUSICAL STYLES THAT GREW IN POPULARITY IN THE MID-TO-LATE 20TH CENTURY). SEE SCHEDULE O FOR CONTINUATION GUEST LECTURES MUSEUM DIRECTORS, ART HISTORIANS AND OTHER EXPERTS EXPLORED THE MANY FACETS OF MODERN ART AND ARCHITECTURE.FAMILY DAY FAMILIES ENGAGED WITH MODERN ART THROUGH ART-MAKING ACTIVITIES AND DOCENT TOURS TAILORED FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN. BECHTLER BY NIGHT DESIGNED FOR GUESTS WHO DON'T NORMALLY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE GALLERIES DURING NORMAL HOURS. ARTISTS IN SCHOOLS THE BECHTLER PROVIDED EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH TO KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 12TH GRADE STUDENTS IN MECKLENBURG COUNTY SCHOOLS WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON TITLE 1 SCHOOLS. PROGRAMS WERE FACILITATED BY TRAINED TEACHING ARTISTS AND INTEGRATED THE VISUAL ARTS WITH CORE CURRICULUM GOALS AND STANDARDS. COMMUNITY OUTREACH STRIVING TO AWAKEN THE ARTISTIC SPIRIT IN EVERYONE, THE BECHTLER MUSEUM OF MODERN ART PROVIDES TEACHING ARTISTS TO VARIOUS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO SHOW PARTICIPANTS HOW MAKING AND APPRECIATING ART CAN BE A MEANS OF SELF-DISCOVERY. THESE PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO INSPIRE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES AND INCREASE SELF-ESTEEM, IN ADDITION TO FACILITATING AN APPRECIATION OF MODERN ART. OUTREACH AND ACCESS PROGRAMS ARE TAILORED TO EACH ORGANIZATION AND MAY INCLUDE FIELD TRIPS, VIRTUAL MUSEUM TOURS, TACTILE AND DESCRIPTIVE TOURS, ART-MAKING CLASSES, AND/OR AN EXHIBITION OF PARTICIPANTS' ARTWORK. PARTICIPANTS CURRENTLY INCLUDE DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED ADULTS; INCARCERATED YOUTH AND LATINO INMATES; INDIVIDUALS WITH LOW TO NO VISION; MEDICAL PROVIDERS; AND ALZHEIMER'S/DEMENTIA PATIENTS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS. IN MARCH 2020, THE MUSEUM CLOSED DUE TO COVID-19 AND MIGRATED A FEW OF ITS PROGRAMS TO ONLINE AND VIRTUAL EXPERIENCES.
