HISTORIC CLAYBORN TEMPLE ENGAGES IN CULTURE AND THE ARTS INSPIRED BY THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE 1968 SANITATION WORKERS' STRIKE. CLAYBORN SEEKS TO EMBODY THEIR DECLARATION OF THE HUMANITY AND DIGNITY OF BLACK, POOR, AND WORKING-CLASS PEOPLE AND TO CONTINUE THEIR LEGACY OF ADVANCING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING THROUGH STORYTELLING, ENGAGEMENT, AND PRACTICE.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCY: HISTORIC CLAYBORN TEMPLE IS PRIVILEGED TO HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO SERVE AS A CULTURAL HUB FOR THE 2022-2023 ARTISTS AT WORK INITIATIVE, A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO SUPPORT THE REBUILDING OF HEALTHY COMMUNITIES THROUGH ARTISTIC CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. SUCH A PROGRAM IS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION TO REANIMATE HISTORIC NARRATIVES THROUGH BOTH THE PRESERVATION AND CONTINUATION OF CLAYBORN'S LEGACY. IN THESE OBJECTIVES, THE ROLE OF CULTURAL ARTS AND ARTS PROGRAMMING WILL BE CENTRAL, AND THROUGH THE ARTIST AT WORK INITIATIVE, WILL ESTABLISH A BASIS TO CREATE COMMUNITY-ORIENTED OPPORTUNITIES THAT FUTURE FOSTER AN ENRICHING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE GREATER MEMPHIS LOCALITY AND THE PUBLIC ARTS.
LEADERSHIP COUNCIL: POSITIONED AT THE CENTER OF HISTORIC CLAYBORN TEMPLE'S COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES, THE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL INTENDS TO SOLIDIFY A LONG-STANDING AND PRODUCTIVE COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE ORGANIZATION AND ITS SURROUNDING LOCALITY. THE CULTIVATION OF COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP AND WEALTH-BUILDING WILL BE ACHIEVED BY THE COUNCIL THROUGH ITS CIVIC INITIATIVES WHERE RESTORATIVE ECONOMICS WILL FURTHER FOSTER EQUITY, REGENERATION, AND INTERDEPENDENCE.
