Part 3 - Line 4a
A PRINCIPLE FUNCTION OF MSMERC IS THAT IT SERVES AS THE ACCREDITATION COUNCIL FOR GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION'S (ACGME) SPONSORING INSTITUTION FOR THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM. AFTER RECEIVING ACGME INITIAL ACCREDITATION IN EARLY 2020, MSMERC'S DELTA FAMILY MEDICINE PARTICIPATED IN THE 2020 NATIONAL RESIDENCY MATCH PROGRAM (NRMP). THE FAMILY MEDICINE PROGRAM MATCHED 7 GRADUATING MEDICAL STUDENTS. THESE TRAINEES WERE LOCATED IN THE GREENVILLE, MS COMMUNITY AND STARTED THEIR INITIAL GME TRAINING IN JULY 2020. ALONG WITH ACADEMIC OVERSIGHT MSMERC ASSISTED WITH RECRUITMENT OF THE NEXT RESIDENT TRAINING CLASS. AFTER MULTIPLE INTERVIEWS, MSMERC WAS AGAIN ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MARCH 2021 NRMP AND SECURED 9 MEDICAL STUDENT GRADUATES WHICH WILL BECOME THE SECOND GME TRAINING CLASS AT THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA FAMILY MEDICINE. THESE ADDITIONAL TRAINEES LOCATED TO THE GREENVILLE, MS AREA AND BEGAN THEIR MEDICAL TRAINING IN JULY, 2021. MSMERC SPENT MUCH OF ITS TIME IN EARLY 2021 PREPARING FOR A SECOND ACGME SITE VISIT WHICH IS SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 2021, ALONG WITH TRAINING, RECRUITING AND SELECTING ITS NEW RESIDENTS. THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF MSMERC, DELTA HEALTH SYSTEMS AND THE COMMUNITY, THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE INITIAL TRAINING CLASS WHO FACED AND SUCCESSFULLY NAVIGATED THE MANY COVID-19 CHALLENGES PREPARED THE LANDSCAPE OF MEDICAL TRAINING IN THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA FOR MANY YEARS AND GENERATIONS TO FOLLOW.
