THE FOUNDATIONS MISSION IS TO RESTORE AND PROTECT LOON HABITATS, ENHANCE ENVIRONMENTAL RECREATION, AND CONSTRUCT A RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER FOR MIGRATORY WILDLIFE.

IN 2020, THE NATIONAL LOON CENTER FINALIZED A 25 YEAR FEDERAL LAND LEASE WITH THE US ARMY CORP OF ENGINEERS THAT WILL ALLOW THE NLC TO COMMENCE WITH BUILDING A WORLD-CLASS FACILITY AT THE CROSSLAKE RECREATION AREA. THE NLC RECEIVED A $750K OPERATING GRANT FROM THE MARGARET A CARGILL FUND OF THE ST PAUL AND MINNESOTA FOUNDATION THAT ALLOWED IT TO HIRE ITS FIRST EXECTURIVE DIRECTOR AFTER A NATIONAL SEARCH. THE NLC COMPLETED ARCHAELOGICAL REVIEWS AND SITE PLANNING THAT WOULD ENABLE THE INSTALLATION OF MOORING STATIONS, SIDEWALKS, BOARDWALKS, AND OUTDOOR EXHIBITS IN 2021. INITIATED FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATIONS PLANS. COMPLETED HOLISTIC CURRICULA FOR THE FLOATING CLASSROOM AND THE CENTER ITSELF.
