RESEARCH PROGRAMS: DUE IN LARGE PART TO THE GROWTH OF OUR STAFF, OUR RESEARCH AND WRITING OUTPUT, AS WELL AS OUR PUBLICATION RATE, INCREASED EXPONENTIALLY IN 2021. BREAKTHROUGHS CLIMATE AND ENERGY TEAM FOCUSES ON FOUR MAJOR THEMES: CLIMATE SCIENCE AND POLICY; ADVANCED NUCLEAR ENERGY; INNOVATION, DECARBONIZATION, AND ENERGY TRANSITIONS; AND ENERGY FOR DEVELOPMENT. THE TEAMS WORK WAS PUBLISHED IN MAJOR NEWS OUTLETS AND ACADEMIC JOURNALS. OUR NEW ADVANCED NUCLEAR SUBTEAM BEGAN TO WORK IN EARNEST ON EXERTING INFLUENCE ON NUCLEAR COMMERCIALIZATION EFFORTS, ESPECIALLY VIA ENGAGEMENT WITH THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION. WE ALSO LAUNCHED A NEW ENERGY FOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM THAT PROMOTES PRAGMATIC SOLUTIONS TO THE DUAL CHALLENGES OF POVERTY AND CLIMATE CHANGE IN POOR COUNTRIES. EVENTS: OVERALL, NETWORK BUILDING IS ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL WAYS BREAKTHROUGH MAKES CHANGE IN THE WORLD, AND WE PRIMARILY EXECUTE ON THIS THROUGH OUR EVENTS. OUR FLAGSHIP EVENTS, THE BREAKTHROUGH DIALOGUES, USUALLY HELD IN THE BAY AREA AND DC, WERE POSTPONED IN 2020 DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, AND WE WERE ABLE TO RESUME BOTH EVENTS IN PERSON SUCCESSFULLY AND SAFELY IN 2021.
COMMUNICATIONS: OUR COMMUNICATION WORK IS A CORE ELEMENT OF WHAT WE DO AND ENSURES THAT OUR RESEARCH PRODUCTS AND IDEAS REACH THE RIGHT AUDIENCES. IN 2021, WE WELCOMED A NEW EXECUTIVE EDITOR INTO OUR TEAM WHO IMMEDIATELY BEGAN ACCELERATING OUR IMPACT. PAGE VIEWS WERE UP BY OVER 15% IN 2021 AS COMPARED TO 2020. OUR NEWSLETTER AND SOCIAL MEDIA AUDIENCES HAVE CONTINUED TO GROW, WITH OVER 18,000 TWITTER FOLLOWERS AND NEARLY 6,500 SUBSCRIBERS TO OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER. BREAKTHROUGH STAFF WERE PUBLISHED 44 TIMES IN EXTERNAL MEDIA IN 2021, COMPARED TO 23 TIMES IN 2020, 7 IN 2019, AND 15 IN 2018. STAFF WERE ALSO QUOTED OR CITED 221 TIMES, COMPARED TO 166 IN 2020, 60 IN 2019, AND 74 IN 2018.
