PRESCHOOL PROGRAM: EDUCATIONAL SERVICES WERE PROVIDED THROUGHOUT THE CALENDAR YEAR TO SEVENTEEN (17) TWO-YEAR OLDS, FOURTEEN (14) THREE- YEAR OLDS, AND FOURTEEN (14) FOUR-YEAR OLDS. THEAFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM SERVED THIRTEEN (13) ELEMENTARY-AGED CHILDREN. EACH CHILD WAS PROVIDED WITH BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND A SNACK DAILY. STUDENTS WERE PROVIDED WITH A NURTURING AND EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM NOT AVAILABLE IN OTHER AREAS OF THE COMMUNITY.
SOMAH (SCHOOL OF MOUNTAIN ARTS & HERITAGE): THE SCHOOL OF MOUNTAIN ARTS & HERITAGE PROVIDED CLASSES TO ADULTS AND YOUTH IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: PAINTING, POTTERY, WOODWORKING, FIBER ARTS, GLASS MOSAICS, WEAVING, JEWELRY MAKING (LEATHER & METAL), BEEKEEPING, CANDLE MAKING, SOAP MAKING, AND MANY OTHER CLASSES RELATED TO LEARNING ABOUT AND APPRECIATING THE CULTURE, VALUES, AND HERITAGE OF THE COMMUNITY (APPALACHIA) TO A TOTAL OF 282 PARTICIPANTS.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING FIELD TRIPS: HSC PROVIDED INNOVATIVE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR A TOTAL OF ONE THOUSAND AND TWO (1,002) STUDENTS COMING FROM PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND HOMESCHOOL GROUPS IN GRADES K4 - 7TH. OUR NUMBERS ARE MUCH HIGHER THAN THEY WERE THE PRECEDING YEAR, AND WE HAVE HELD 19 FIELD TRIPS IN 2022. ALL STUDENTS WERE INVOLVED IN HANDS-ON GARDENING/NATURE, FARM ANIMALS, REPTILES, APPALACHIAN DANCE, POTTERY, STORYTELLING, DULCIMER, NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE, STAINED GLASS, JUG BAND, AND CANDLE-DRIPPING.
DAY CAMP PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AGES 5-12: HSC KICKED OFF ITS FIRST SUMMER DAY CAMP OFFERINGS IN 2022. WITH OVER 80+ REGISTRATIONS IN OUR FIRST SUMMER, WE ARE EXCITED TO GROW THIS PROGRAM IN 2023. HSC HAS ALSO OFFERED DAY CAMP PROGRAMS DURING THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS BREAKS. WITH NEARLY 25 STUDENTS IN EACH OF THESE PROGRAMS, HSC HAS NOW STARTED OFFERING DAY CAMPS WHENEVER SDPC IS OUT OF SCHOOL. "WHEN SCHOOL IS OUT, HSC IS IN" WHEN STUDENTS ATTEND ONE OF OUR DAY CAMP PROGRAMS, THEY PARTICIPATE IN SIMILAR OFFERINGS OF THAT IN OUR SOMAH PROGRAM. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE WOODWORKING, POTTERY, MUSIC, STAINED GLASS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. IN 2023, HSC PLANS TO OFFER IN-SERVICE DAY CAMPS, SPRING BREAK CAMP, AND 8 WEEKS OF SUMMER DAY CAMP. CHILDREN COME FROM ALL OVER PICKENS COUNTY ALONG WITH OUR SURROUNDING COUNTIES LIKE GREENVILLE AND OCONEE.
