WITH FUNDING FROM THE CLEAN AND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY (CASE) FUND, LLF DEVELOPED THE CARBON CLEANUP INITIATIVE - A WEBSITE RESOURCE FOR GENERAL PUBLIC EDUCATION ABOUT CARBON NEUTRALITY AND CARBON MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS. GRANT FUNDS ALSO SUPPORTED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A K-14 EDUCATIONAL TOOLKIT, INCLUDING TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CLASSROOM LESSONS ALIGNED WITH NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS. MORE THAN 1000 CALIFORNIA STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE PILOT DURING THE 2021-22 ACADEMIC YEAR.
FUNDING WITHOUT DONOR RESTRICTIONS AND ALS CURE PROJECT LEVERAGED LLNL AND GLADSTONE EXPERTISE TO SET THE STAGE FOR WHAT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE WITH AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (ALS) OR LOU GEHRIG'S DISEASE. USING PHYSICS-BASED COMPUTATIONAL MODELING AND MULTI-MODAL MACHINE LEARNING, SCIENTISTS PROVIDED COMPARATIVE EXPERIMENTAL AND COMPUTATIONAL RESULTS, IDENTIFYING THE POTENTIAL FACTORS THAT LEAD TO ALS AND STUDYING POPULATIONS THAT MIGHT BE AT HIGHER RISK.
THROUGH ACADEMIC, COMMUNITY, AND PROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIPS, LLF OFFERS FELLOWSHIP AND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH POST DOCTORAL SCHOLARS AT LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LAB. LLF PROVIDES DIRECT STUDENT FUNDING, ALLOWING MORE TIME FOR RESEARCH, STUDIES, AND ULTIMATE SUCCESS IN SCIENTIFIC CAREERS, AND SUPPORTS INTERNS WITH ASSIGNED LAB MENTORS AND ACCESS TO LLNL FACILITIES AND RESOURCES. SPECIAL FOCUS IS ON STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE AND UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS IN STEM FIELDS.
