IN 2021 THE CHAN ZUCKERBERG BIOHUB, INC. ("CZ BIOHUB") CELEBRATED ITS 5TH ANNIVERSARY AS A MEDICAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. CONSISTENT WITH OUR MISSION, WE CONTINUED TO FOCUS ON LARGE-SCALE SCIENTIFIC INITIATIVES THAT WE ARE UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO SUPPORT AND EXECUTE, EACH ON A MULTI-YEAR TIMELINE:1. INTRAMURAL RESEARCH PROJECTS LED BY CZ BIOHUB RESEARCHERS THAT EMPHASIZE BASIC SCIENCE, IN TWO MAIN AREAS:A. QUANTITATIVE CELL SCIENCEB. INFECTIOUS DISEASE2. RESEARCH PROJECTS CARRIED OUT BY SCIENTISTS AT OUR PARTNER UNIVERSITIES (STANFORD UNIVERSITY; UC SAN FRANCISCO; UC BERKELEY) WITH THE BACKING OF THE CZ BIOHUB INVESTIGATOR PROGRAM.IN 2021, CZ BIOHUB RESEARCHERS AND INVESTIGATORS WERE AUTHORS OF 173 SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS AND PREPRINTS.QUANTITATIVE CELL SCIENCE HIGHLIGHTS THE WEBSITE FOR OPENCELL, AN OPEN-SOURCE, PROTEOME-SCALE COLLECTION OF PROTEIN LOCALIZATION AND INTERACTION MEASUREMENTS IN HUMAN CELLS, WAS LAUNCHED. A MANUSCRIPT DESCRIBING OPENCELL METHODS AND DATA WAS PLACED ON TO THE BIORXIV PREPRINT SERVER AND HAS SINCE BEEN DOWNLOADED >10,000 TIMES, PLACING THE PAPER IN THE TOP 5% OF ALL RESEARCH TRACKED BY ALTMETRIC. (THE OPENCELL PAPER WAS PUBLISHED IN SCIENCE IN MARCH 2022.) THE MANUSCRIPT FOR TABULA SAPIENS, A HUMAN CELL ATLAS BASED ON SINGLE-CELL RNA SEQUENCING AND HISTOLOGY OF NEARLY 500,000 CELLS IN 24 ORGANS FROM 15 DONORS, WAS UPLOADED TO THE BIORXIV PREPRINT SERVER, AND THE COMPLETE, OPEN-SOURCE TABULA SAPIENS DATASET WAS RELEASED. THE MANUSCRIPT HAS BEEN DOWNLOADED >9,000 TIMES, ALSO RANKING IN THE TOP 5% OF ALL RESEARCH TRACKED BY ALTMETRIC. (THE TABULA SAPIENS PAPER WAS PUBLISHED IN SCIENCE IN MAY 2022.)INFECTIOUS DISEASE HIGHLIGHTS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CHAN ZUCKERBERG INITIATIVE (CZI), OUR INFECTIOUS DISEASE RESEARCHERS AND GENOMICS AND DATA SCIENCE TEAMS CREATED THE CALIFORNIA COVID TRACKER (CZ GEN EPI), A WEB PORTAL AND DATABASE TO IDENTIFY AND TRACK SARS-COV-2 LINEAGES AND VARIANTS. IN CELL IN JANUARY 2021, CZ BIOHUB RESEARCHERS AND INVESTIGATORS REPORTED THAT A WHOLE-GENOME SCREEN REVEALED HOST-CELL FACTORS REQUIRED FOR INFECTION BY SARS-COV-2 AND RELATED CORONAVIRUSES; THESE HOST FACTORS ARE POTENTIAL THERAPEUTIC TARGETS IN COVID AND OTHER RESPIRATORY VIRAL DISEASES.INVESTIGATOR PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTSTHE BIOHUB ESTABLISHED ITS SECOND COHORT OF CZ BIOHUB INVESTIGATORS, MADE UP OF 86 LEADING SCIENTISTS WORKING IN DIVERSE DISCIPLINES AT OUR THREE PARTNER UNIVERSITIES.
