THE PROSSER COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND ACTION COALITION (DOING BUSINESS AS PROSSER THRIVE COALITION) STRIVES TO BUILD AND SUSTAIN A HEALTHY COMMUNITY THROUGH YOUTH SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION AND EDUCATION.

COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS - THE COALITION FINANCIALLY SUPPORTS AND PARTNERS WITH COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS AT HOUSEL MIDDLE SCHOOL. THE COALITION PROVIDES $20,000 ANNUALLY TO SUPPORT A SITE COORDINATOR. THIS POSITION HELPS TO MEET THE BASIC NEEDS OF STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES SO STUDENTS CAN ATTEND SCHOOL AND FOCUS ON LEARNING. IN ADDITION, THIS POSITION PROVIDES INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP MENTORING TO STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM DIRECTLY SERVED 43 FAMILIES THIS PAST YEAR AND MET 3,100 NEEDS (SCHOOL SUPPLIES, CLOTHING, EMERGENCY HOUSING, FOOD DELIVERIES, SUBSTANCE ABUSE INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION, ETC) THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY.
MEDIA - THE COALITION EXPENDS APPROXIMATELY $5,000 PER YEAR ON MEDIA CAMPAIGNS TO REDUCE YOUTH SUBSTANCE USE. THE CAMPAIGNS INCLUDE "TALK, THEY HEAR YOU," A CAMPAIGN AIMED AT PARENTS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON THEIR CHILDREN, "YOU CAN," A YOUTH CAMPAIGN FOCUSED ON MARIJUANA PREVENTION, AND "IT STARTS WITH ONE" AN OPIOID PREVENTION CAMPAIGN.. THE COALITION CONTRACTS WITH A LOCAL THEATER TO USE THESE CAMPAIGNS THROUGHOUT SUMMER MOVIES (SHOWN BEFORE AND AFTER 12 SUMMER MOVIES)
PRESCRIPTION TAKE BACK - THE COALITION SUPPORTS PRESCRIPTION TAKE BACK THROUGH A PERMANENT MEDICATION DROP LOCATION AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL AS WELL AS PROVIDING MEDICATION LOCKBOXES TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS AT NO CHARGE. THE GOAL IS TO KEEP PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS, NAMELY OPIOIDS, OUT OF THE HANDS OF YOUTH. THIS LAST YEAR 350 LBS OF UNUSED MEDICATION WERE COLLECTED AND PROPERLY DISPOSED OF. THE COALITION BUDGETS BETWEEN $2,000 AND $8,000 TOWARDS THIS EFFORT EACH YEAR.
