BIKE NEWTON CONTINUES TO ADVOCATE IN SUPPORT OF PROJECTS TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT AND SAFETY OF BICYCLE INFRASTRUCTURE IN NEWTON. SUCH ADVOCACY IS IN THE FORM OF ATTENDING AND SPEAKING AT NEWTON CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS AND CORRESPONDENCE TO THE COUNCIL; MAYOR'S OFFICE AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES. BIKE NEWTON ALSO PROVIDES REPRESENTATIVES TO SERVE ON NEWTON'S TRANSPORTATION ADVISORY GROUP IN ORDER TO LEVERAGE SUCH ADVOCACY EFFORTS. SOME OF THE NEWTON PROJECTS OF CURRENT ADVOCACY INTEREST TO BIKE NEWTON ARE AS FOLLOWS: (A) ALBERMARLE ROAD TRAFFIC CALMING PROJECT; (B) COMMONWEALTH AVENUE CARRIAGEWAY REDESIGN PROJECT; (C) NEWTON HIGHLANDS VILLAGE ENHANCEMENT PROJECT; (D) PIGEON HILL TRAIL RESTORATION PROJECT; (E) LOCATION SELECTION OF BLUE BIKE KIOSKS; (F) REDESIGN OF VARIOUS PARKS THROUGHOUT NEWTON (ALBERMARLE, MARTY SENDER GREENWAY, CABOT PARK, BURR SCHOOL, BOWN/OAK HILL SCHOOLS); (G) NEWTON ZONING REDESIGN: VILLAGE CENTERS - PROVIDED A REPRESENTATIVE TO THE CITY COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT NETWORK; (H) WASHINGTON STREET PILOT - ADVOCATED IN SUPPORT OF THIS TRIAL; (I) CONSULTED WITH THE MAYOR AND CITY OFFICIALS REGARDING THE BRIDGE/WATERTOWN STREET FATALITY AND PROPOSED SAFETY ENHANCEMENTS FOR THIS JUNCTION; (J) COMMUNICATED WITH CITY PLANNERS/DESIGNERS AS TO WHERE TO PRIORITIZE THE 4-FOOT PASSING SIGNS. IN ADDITION TO PROJECT ADVOCACY, BIKE NEWTON CONTRIBUTED TO THE COMMUNITY DURING THE YEAR AS FOLLOWS: (A) LED OVER 20 COMMUNITY BIKE RIDES DURING THE SPRING, SUMMER AND FALL RIDING THROUGH NEWTON AND SURROUNDING TOWNS; (B) IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NEWTON SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL, PROVIDED VOLUNTEERS FOR THE BIKE RODEO EVENT TO INTRODUCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLERS BIKE RIDING AND SAFETY SKILLS; (C) STAFFED BOOTHS/INFORMATION TABLE AT: (I) NEWTON HIGHLANDS VILLAGE DAY; (II) NEWTONVILLE VILLAGE DAY (III) NEWTON HARVEST FAIR/GREEN EXPO; (IV) EARTH DAY NEWTON.
