GRANTS: CREATING LEGACY GRANTS MATCHES DONOR PASSIONS WITH NONPROFITS IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY. ENABLING DOCUMENTS FOR DONOR ADVISED FUNDS, FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS, DESIGNATED AGENCY FUNDS, AND UNRESTRICTED FUNDS GUIDE A TEAM OF 15 DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS WHO REVIEW AND VET GRANT REQUESTS. DURING 2021, 42 GRANTS WERE GIVEN TO FEED THE HUNGRY, HELP WITH RENT AND UTILITIES, CARE FOR ABUSED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN, HELP CHILDREN START SCHOOL WITH NEW CLOTHES AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES, OFFER EQUINE THERAPY TO VETERANS AND CHILDREN, PROVIDE HEALTH CARE SERVICES AND PRESCRIPTIONS, SUPPORT CONCERTS, CULTURAL AND HERITAGE PROGRAMS, SUPPORT ANIMAL WELFARE AND MORE.


SCHOLARSHIPS: HIGH SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE AWARDED GRANTS TO FURTHER THEIR POST HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL PURSUITS. DURING 2021, 14 STUDENTS RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS FROM LEGACY FUNDS TO EXPAND THEIR CHANCE FOR SUCCESS. EACH FUND TARGETS SOMETHING DIFFERENT, SUCH AS A LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL, SPECIFIC ATTRIBUTES LIKE SERVICE ABOVE SELF, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, FINANCIAL NEEDS, AND SPORTS.EACH FUND HAS A SELECTION COMMITTEE APPROVED BY THE BOARD WHO USES FAIR AND OBJECTIVE CRITERIA TO SELECT THIER NOMINEE(S). ALL CRITERIA, COMMITTEES AND FINAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ARE APPROVED BY THE DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS.


DURING FEBRUARY 2021, MONTGOMERY COUNTY EXPERIENCED A RARE ARCTIC BLAST THAT IMMOBILIZED THE ENTIRE COUNTY FOR 3 DAYS AND A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE COUNTY FOR A WEEK. WITHOUT ELECTRICITY, WORK CAME TO A STANDSTILL. PEOPLE IN HOURLY JOBS WERE NOT ABLE TO GET TO WORK EVEN IF WORK WAS OPEN. THE ARCTIC BLAST TOOK A MAJOR TOLL ON PEOPLE WHO LOST PRECIOUS HOURS OF WORK THAT WERE NEEDED TO PAY THE RENT OR FEED THE FAMILY. THE BOARD OF THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDED THE MAJORITY OF ITS LONG TERM DISASTER RECOVERY FUNDS TO MONTGOMERY COUNTY FOOD BANK TO PROVIDE FOOD AND THE COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE CENTER TO PAY RENT, MORTGAGE, OR UTILITY BILLS FOR THOSE WHO WERE AT RISK DUE TO LOST WAGES. THESE ORGANIZATIONS ASSISTED 269 INDIVIDUALS.
