OPPORTUNITY TRIBE IS A MENTORING COMMUNITY FOR AT-RISK STUDENTS TO DISCOVER THEIR VALUE AND THRIVE. STUDENTS FROM POVERTY ARE THE MOST LIKELY TO HAVE EXPERIENCED MANY ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES (ACES) AND NEED MENTORS TO STOP THE EMOTIONAL BLEEDING AND HELP THEM HEAL AND BEGIN TO GROW AGAIN. OPPORTUNITY CAMP IS A PROVEN, STRATEGIC EVENT THAT FORMS LIFE-LONG MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIP FOR THE COUNSELORS, MENTORS AND STUDENTS.

AT OP CAMP/TRANSITION/DISCIPLESHIP CAMP, UP TO 325 STUDENTS ARE GIVEN AN AMAZING, SLEEP AWAY FROM HOME CAMP EXPERIENCE FOR FREE! 125 COUNSELORS AND 50 ADULT LEADERS WERE TAKEN THROUGH CONSCIOUS DISCIPLINE TRAINING, A TRAUMA INFORMED CARE APPROACH TO MENTORING KIDS. 50-60% OF OUR CAMP COUNSELORS WERE FORMER CAMPERS THAT RETURNED TO SERVE ON STAFF. 100% OF OUR FORMER CAMPERS WHO SERVE ON STAFF GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL COMPARE TO 66% OF THEIR PEER CLASS ( MINORITY STUDENTS FROM POVERTY).
FUN ACADEMY IS A 6 WEEK IN-TOWN LITERACY DAY CAMP THAT RADICALLY IMPACTS STUDENTS READING ABILITY. 250 STUDENTS ATTENDED THIS YEAR AND GAINED AN AVERAGE OF 6 MONTHS OF READING ABILITY OVER THE SUMMER COMPARED TO THEIR PEERS WHO LOSE 2-3 MONTHS OF READING COMPREHENSION. THIS IS THE 5TH STRAIGHT YEAR THESE STUDENTS HAVE DONE THIS.
MENTORING PROGRAMS: FUN CLUBS, OP TRIBE, OPPORTUNITY ACADEMY, AND OAKS ACADEMY.OP TRIBE HAS BEEN ACTIVELY ENGAGED WITH IN-PERSON MENTORING TO 100 KIDS AT OPPORTUNITY ACADEMY AS A SUPPORT TO MISD. 70 OF THOSE KIDS REQUIRED TRANSPORTATION DAILY, AND COORDINATING WITH MISD TO PICK-UP AND DISTRIBUTE THEIR LUNCHES. OAKS ACADEMY WAS LAUNCED TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FOR 23 CHILDREN WHOSE PARENTS VOICED CONCERNS OVER SENDING THEIR CHILDREN BACK TO CAMPUS AMID THE PANDEMIC.
