TEXAS HAS BEEN AFFECTED WITH 10,000 SPINA BIFIDA RELATED BIRTHS ANNUALLY, TWICE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. OUTREACH EFFORTS INCLUDE ATTENDANCE AT BRIDAL/HEALTH FAIRS WHERE VOLUNTEERS DISTRIBUTE MULTIVITAMINS, PROVIDE FOLIC ACID INFORMATION AND ITEMS WITH THE FOLIC ACID MESSAGE. ON VALENTINES DAY, VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE FOLIC ACID GIFT BAGS TO BRIDES AT THE ANNUAL MASS WEDDING CEREMONIES AT THE BEXAR COUNTY COURTHOUSE. OUTREACH EFFORTS ALSO INCLUDE FOLIC ACID PRESENTATIONS AT HIGH SCHOOLS AND WOMEN'S GROUPS TO HELP EDUCATE WOMEN. IN 2021, SBTX SHARED THE FOLIC MESSAGE WITH OVER 521 WOMEN AND DISTRIBUTED 120 BOTTLES OF VITAMINS.SBTX PROVIDES SUPPORT AND GUIDES NEW PARENTS WITH INFORMATION AND RESOURCES THAT THEY WILL NEED REGARDING THEIR CHILD'S CARE. IN 2021, SBTX CONNECTED 4 NEWLY DIAGNOSED FAMILIES. RESOURCE AND REFERRAL INFORMATION-SBTX PROVIDES FAMILIES WITH INFORMATION REGARDING ASSISTANCE AND OPPORTUNITIES BY CONNECTING FAMILIES WITH AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS IN THE COMMUNITY. ADDITONALLY SBTX PROVIDES ASSISTANCE REGARDING EDUCATION AND THE PROCESS OF GAINING SUPPORT IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. TBS SBTX OFFICE HOUSES A RESOURCE LIBRARY THAT CONTAINS BOOKS/PUBLICATIONS THAT CONTAIN INFORMATION ON THE ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH SB. SBTX PROVIDES INFORMATION THROUGH EMAIL AND MAILINGS. IN 2021, OVER 666 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED THESE SERVICES.
SBTX PROVIDES EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. A FULL-DAY CONFERENCE IS FILLED WITH INFORMATION FROM DOCTORS, MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, AND EDUCATION SPECIALISTS. MEDICAL TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE NEUROLOGICAL, ORTHOPEDIC, AND UROLOGY. ALSO COVERED ARE INDEPENDENCE ISSUES, LEARNING DISABILITIES, AND PHYSICAL FITNESS OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES. SBTX ALSO PROVIDES MINI-EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS AT DIFFERENT SBTX FAMILY EVENTS.
FASHIONABLE CONNECTS CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES WITH HIGH SCHOOL DESIGN STUDENTS WHO CREATE AND MODIFY A GARMENT TO OVERCOME THE CHILDS DRESSING OBSTACLE. THE MODEL RECEIVES A CUSTOMIZED OUTFIT, A BOOST IN SELF-ESTEEM, AND SOLUTIONS TO THEIR DRESSING LIMITATION.
