HOUSTON YOUTH SYMPHONY'S CORE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF FIVE ORCHESTRAS OF VARIOUS SKILL LEVELS SELECTED THROUGH A COMPETITIVE AUDITION PROCESS. WITH 368 MEMBERS RANGING IN AGE FROM 7 TO 18, MEMBERS PARTICIPATED IN 23 WEEKS OF IN-PERSON REHEARSALS, 15 WEEKS OF VIRTUAL SECTIONALS, AND PERFORMED IN 3 PROFESSIONALLY CONDUCTED CONCERTS AT RICE UNIVERSITY'S STUDE CONCERT HALL. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, ORCHESTRA SIZES WERE REDUCED BY 12% AND EACH ORCHESTRA PERFORMED ITS OWN CONCERT.
THE HYS CODA MUSIC PROGRAM BRINGS GRADUATED, INTENSIVE STRING INSTRUCTION TO 128 STUDENTS AT FIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN HOUSTON ISD AND TWO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN FORT BEND ISD. THIS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM USES CLASSICAL MUSIC AND GROUP INSTRUCTION TO BUILD COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION THROUGH ENSEMBLE AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES. ALL PROGRAMMING WAS HELD IN PERSON FOR 27 WEEKS, INCLUDING 15 FREE PERFORMANCES.
THE HYS MELODY PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE PRIVATE LESSON INSTRUCTION FOR LOW-INCOME YOUTH IN GRADES 3-12. DUE TO COVID-19, THE PROGRAM AND YEAR-END RECITALS WERE HELD BOTH VIRTUALLY AND IN PERSON.
THE HOUSTON YOUTH SYMPHONY (HYS) CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM PROVIDES MEMBERS OF THE TWO MOST ADVANCED ORCHESTRAS WITH ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES FOCUSING ON SMALL ENSEMBLE MUSIC. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, ALL CHAMBER PERFORMANCES AND FREE PUBLIC CONCERTS WERE TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED.
