THE WILLIAM S. AND ANN ATHERTON FOUNDATION IS A PRIVATE, NON-OPERATING FOUNDATION. IT ACCOMPLISHES ITS CHARITABLE PURPOSE SOLELY THROUGH A PROGRAM OF MAKING CHARITABLE GIFTS AND GRANTS AND DOES NOT CONDUCT ANY DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES OR MAKE PROGRAM-RELATED INVESTMENTS. THE FOUNDATION MANAGER SPENDS AN AVERAGE OF 60% OF HER TIME ADMINISTERING INVESTMENTS AND 40% ANSWERING CORRESPONDENCE, AND INVESTIGATING INSTITUTIONS THAT REQUIRE FUNDING. THEREFORE, 40% OF RELATED EXPENSES HAVE BEEN ALLOCATED TO GRANT-MAKING ACTIVITIES.
